Team Canada started its tournament on the right foot by beating Latvia 5-2 last night, but it was a bigger challenge than expected. Had it not been for the fact that the Latvians got into penalty trouble, the result might have been different. The local favourites had 44 shots compared to Latvia’s 24 including an 18-4 advantage in the first frame, but the game was still tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Consensus first pick for the upcoming draft Connor Bedard showed some serious skills and that he is not shy to hang on to the puck playing on the top line finishing his night with a goal and an assist with 8 shots on net. Joshua Roy was also on that top line as expected but only managed to get an assist on the 2nd wave of the power play during the second period. He saw over 18 minutes of ice time, taking 3 shots on goal.

Meanwhile, Riley Kidney, used sporadically as the 13th forward, only played 6 shifts, spending 4 minutes and 26 seconds on the ice and unsurprisingly being held off the scoresheet. Canada will play its second game tonight at 6:00 PM taking on Slovakia. Before then, Habs prospects Oliver Kapanen and Petteri Nurmi will take on Jan Mysak’s Czechia with Finland at 2:00 PM.

Everything is still all quiet on the local front, no news yet regarding a Dach signing as we’re approaching mid-August, hopefully, this gets ironed out sooner rather than later. There’s also a lot of noise on social media about Allen being potentially traded with likely destination being Arizona or Dallas. I’ll believe it when I see it since I can’ seen Hughes moving his supposed to be back-up but likely starter until he has some clarity on Carey Price’s health status.
