The Canadiens played a near perfect first period, domination in shots, hits, face-off, in everything but goals. The sole mistake of the frame was a costly one when a blown defensive coverage allowed the Oilers to take a 1-0 lead with 20 seconds to go.
A goal in the last minute is always deflating, but so is losing the team’s official spark plug. Gallagher had left the ice in the first after being hit inside the hand by a Romanov slap-shot and it was confirmed in the first intermission that he wouldn’t be back.
It's hard to say why, but the Canadiens side that came out for the 2nd period was nothing like the one who had dominated the first. Montreal was barely present for those 20 minutes but somehow, they almost managed to survive it without giving up another goal, but with 11 seconds to go, Darnell Nurse scored.
At 2-0 after an unconvincing middle frame and without Brendan Gallagher, it didn’t look good for the Habs…However, the team from the first period was back and it took them 5 minutes to tie up the game trough Josh Anderson and Tomas Tatar. In extra time, it was newcomer Eric Staal who gave the Canadiens the win with less than a minute to go.
The Anderson-Suzuki-Perry line had a solid night and they really seem to click on the ice. Even though Perry isn’t very fast, he makes up for it with great decision making and smart plays.
With his big goal in OT, Eric Staal will have gained many fans tonight and found the perfect way to make everyone forget about the penalty he took in the 2nd. In the end, he played 16:56 and was the 4th most used forward tonight behind Danault, Toffoli and Anderson. He was also the best centre at the face-off dot winning 14 of his 18 duels.
Tip of the hat to the blue liners as well, they had a colossal night and managed to keep McDavid and Draisaitl in check. Petry was on the ice for over 27 minutes tonight, Weber for almost 24 and Kulak for nearly 22. After 2 periods, Mete had only seen 6:54 of action, but was used in the overtime period.
The 2 points are more than welcome for the Canadiens but in his post game presser, Ducharme confirmed that Gallagher has got a broken thumb and will be out for weeks. The timing of the injury is really awful since his line had been on fire of late. I think it’s worth mentioning that Carey Price looked somewhat uncomfortable when he was moving from side to side after he came into contact with Archibald. Looking at the replay, it looks like his knee almost rolled under him…Ducharme has said that he is being checked out but that he doesn’t believe it’s anything serious.
The Habs will be back in action on Wednesday night in Toronto with a 7:30 PM start time. Before then though, Cole Caufield will take part to his first practice with the Rocket tomorrow and Joel Bouchard has already said that he should play Friday against the Marlies. Should Brendan Gallagher’s injury be long-term, we may see Caufield with the Habs sooner than expected.

Un but lors de la dernière minute de jeu fait toujours mal, mais perdre le bougie d’allumage de l’équipe fait tout aussi mal. Gallagher avait quitté le match après avoir reçu un tir d’Alexander Romanov à l’intérieur de la main et à l’intermission, le CH a annoncé qu’il ne reviendrait pas dans le match.
C’est difficile de dire pourquoi, mais les Canadiens qui ont foulé la glace en 2e n’avaient rien à voir avec l’équipe qui avait joué le premier 20. En surtemps, c’est le nouveau venu Eric Staal qui leur a procure la victoire avec moins d’une minute à faire.
La ligne Anderson-Suzuki-Perry a joué un match solide et ils se trouvent bien sur la glace. Même si Perry n’est pas très rapide, il compense très bien avec une excellente prise de décision et des jeux intelligents.
Avec son gros but en prolongation, Eric Staal aura conquis de nombreux amateurs ce soir et a trouvé la façon parfaite de faire oublier la pénalité qu’il a pris en 2e période. Au final, il a passé 16:56 sur la patinoire et a été le 4e avant le plus utilisé par Ducharme derrière Danault, Toffoli and Anderson. Il a également été le meilleur centre sur les mises en jeu, remportant 14 de ses 18 duels.
Chapeau à la brigade défensive qui a encore une fois réussi à tenir en échec McDavid et Draisaitl. Petry a eu plus de 27 minutes de temps de jeu, Weber presque 24 et Kulak presque 22 minutes. Après 2 période, Victor Mete n’avait vu que 6:54 d’action, mais il a été utilisé en prolongation.
Les 2 points au classement sont plus que bienvenue pour les Canadiens, mais après le match, Ducharme a confirmé que Gallagher souffre d’une fracture au pouce et sera absent pour des semaines. Le timing de la blessure est vraiment affreux puisque son trio avait excellé dernièrement. Je crois qu’il faut également mentionner que Carey Price a eu l’air inconfortable pendant le match lorsqu’il se déplaçait après qu’il soit entré en contact avec Archibald. Quand on regarde la reprise, on dirait que son genou s’est quelque peu dérobé sous lui… Ducharme a admis qu’il était présentement examiné mais qu’il ne pensait pas que ce soit quelque chose de majeur.
Les Habs seront de retour en action mercredi soir à Toronto à 7:30 PM. Avant cela par contre, Cole Caufield pratiquera pour la première fois avec le Rocket demain et Joel Bouchard a déjà indiqué qu’il entendait le faire jouer pour la première fois contre les Marlies vendredi. Si l’absence de Gallagher se prolonge, on pourrait voir Caufield à Montréal plus tôt que prévu…
