Game Summary:

For 2 straight games, Detroit has seen 4 goals get past the netminder. Tonight, however, the Wings marched back with 3 in the third and saw the game go to a shootout. Bad luck for Larkin and Perron as they both hit the same post. Quinn made an incredible move to get Ned to lie down while he slipped the puck past him for the win.

The good - Detroit didn’t quit. They also outshot the Sabres 43-33. The bad - Ned was on his own, but at least one of the 4 that got by should have been stopped in regulation.

For 2 periods Anderson was unreal. Buffalo was physical, able to clear the crease, and take advantage of the power play (for both teams). Like many this season, it was almost like watching 2 different games. One where Detroit can’t get anything to work. Both Larkin and Veleno gave up good shot chances for passes that were broken up by the Buffalo defense. That’s what happens when a goalie gets in your head.

For Copp and Sundqvist, it was nice to see them combine for a couple as Copp continues to find his way back. Erne seems to be looking to tip the puck quite a bit. He may be seeking a Holmstrom-esque role. However, Homer could tip a puck flying through the air. Unfortunately, he had a lot of goals called back. I don’t know that we’ll ever really see another net front like the old 96. The abuse he could take (he had titanium leg braces that were bent from how hard the goalies would chop him, and didn’t wear chest protection. Just shoulder caps) was unreal.

Look, you have slumps, but that point keeps Detroit hovering around the playoff bubble. I’m not looking for them to make it, but to see them with a positive goal differential heading into December is a nice step forward. They’re still not playing 60 minutes. Bertuzzi isn’t back. Something isn’t clicking and I was sure he would be out of the game after the puck to the wrist. Seider is still proving he wants to be out there. He’ll take the abuse of blocked shots on the exposed parts of his legs and come back.

The third period effort, it’s a positive that the team can build on. I haven’t heard anything about Vrana’s status. Berggren kicked off the game well, but also looked bad on the short handed goal against. He’s learning the game and the lessons are tough.

Overall, I am honestly impressed that Detroit grabbed a point out of this after falling behind 4-1. The mystery to be solved, why did Yzerman grab a goalie off of waivers? Is a trade imminent? Ned doesn’t seem like himself, but really picked it up later in the game. Maybe he wants to move on. I truly have no idea, but at some point a change has to happen. Husso won 4 straight before the Toronto debacle. Ned just isn’t clicking with the team at times. Only Yzerman can tell you for sure. One thing is for sure, the team needs to start on time and play for 60. They’re learning. This division is going to get brutal soon. It’s a good season to grow, and a lot of changes are taking place.

First Period Red Wings goals:
At just 1:20 Hronek floats a pass to Berggren. He kicks out a leg Nyquist style and wrists one in. Berggren is really having a good run lately.

At 4:53 Cozens scores short handed

At 8:25 Samuelsson scored, another one that Ned should have stopped. He looks terrible. 2-1 Buffalo

Shots: 15-10 Detroit
Score: 2-1 Buffalo
*Ned needed to stop at least one of the two that trickled past him. He seems to be finding his legs. The short handed goal was the result of careless play.

Second Period Red Wings goals:

No 2nd period Wings goals

Cozens scores again after a save by Ned. Shot in almost the identical spot. Bert looks lost and not ready for his return.

Buffalo scored on the power play as Seider laid in a heap after a shot block. 4-1 Buffalo.

Shots 27-24 DET
Score 4-1 Buf

Third Period Red Wings goals:

6:51 Perron gets the first puck through since the first for Detroit. Good work by Larkin and Hronek.

10:41 Sundqvist makes it a one goal game. Apples for Copp and Oesterle.

Just over 3 minutes later Sundqvist scores again. Wow. Copp with another assist.

Overtime:

No goals

Shots 44-33 Detroit
Score 4-4 tie

Shootout:
Raymond - stopped by Anderson
Thompson - stopped by Ned
Perron - off the post
Peterman - stopped by Ned
Larkin - off the post
Quinn - scores for the win
