Detroit loses in shootout to Sharks, grab 4 of 6 possible points on road

While the Red Wings certainly lament the past two losses, a lot of good things happened for the team on this road trip. Athanasiou seems to have found his game, netting his 4th and 5th goals of the season in San Jose. Robby Fabbri picked back up with 2 assists. Filppula and A.A. seem to have found some consistent chemistry. Taro Hirose scored his first of the season, and Perlini had his first assist as a Red Wing. 3 goals in the shootout loss from players other than Larkin, Bertuzzi and Mantha.

The most promising part of Athanasiou’s two tallies was the confidence he is clearly gaining. His first was the prototypical A.A. goal from last year. Breakaway leads to a wrist shot. Fabbri had a nice takeaway to help set that up. The second goal was another 2 man rush with Filppula and a really nice slap shot to put it away. The celly after that goal showed a player in much better spirits than 2 weeks ago. Athanasiou has found the belief he needs to have a strong season.

Taro Hirose had a nice feed from Perlini and picked the top corner with a slick wrist shot. It was not the look of a player low on confidence. “Taco’s” first full season has had a bumpy start, but again it looks like a line is finding some chemistry. The potential of 3 lines clicking is starting to get some traction.

Detroit has at lease one point in five straight games. The team is staying competitive even when things go south. The attitude is different, the effort is better. The young players are establishing an identity that will help them move on into the future.

There are those who seem to want to avoid any in season success in order to secure as high a draft pick as possible. This team, as much as they need more young talent, also needs confidence and belief in the room. Finding a way to win and be competitive this year is just as critical as the potential high draft pick. Teams loaded with talent can fall apart if the belief isn’t there. It is a good sign that the youth has stepped up and want to take the lead.

Detroit will face Ottawa on Tuesday. There are several players for the Red Wings who seem capable of stepping up and helping the team extend the current point streak. The start has to be good, the effort has to be solid. Ottawa had their way with Detroit in the last contest.

Apologies for being late with today’s entry. The flu bug is alive and well. I will be resting until Tuesday’s pregame entry. Thank you to everyone who is stopping by to read and to comment. Keep them coming!
