Cossa gets first NHL win, game puck from Larkin in shootout win

I don’t know the mathematical odds of 2 teams on 7 game losing streaks meeting. There was some calculating done that saw Husso pulled after letting in 3 goals on 7 shots in the first. The second period started with Sebastian Cossa in net. Detroit tied it up and now it’s Cossa’s win or loss. Then Buffalo scores twice leaving Detroit to enter the 3rd period down 5-3.

Copp, who has been part of my own scrutiny for his performance, scored his second of the game to get the team within 1. Then, Mo Seider (who may or may not get a call from player’s safety head George Parros) got a bar down on a snap shot to tie the game. The same Seider whose first NHL goal was an OT winner in Buffalo. Then, Seider goes to the box for tripping with just over 2 minutes left in the game. After seeing a loss with 42 seconds left, this felt bad. Then, Buffalo just wasn’t able to get going and the boo birds were out. Overtime.

No shots in overtime, plenty of Detroit mistakes with no cash in so the team heads to a shootout. Now is where Cossa’s first game status really seems to hit. Husso, to his credit, was giving tips during the the ice scrape and Cossa stopped 2 of 3 shots with Tuch hitting a nice bar down. That had tied the score as Raymond had scored on a beautiful backhand tuck in after freezing his former teammate. Kane, 2nd, missed the net and was frustrated. Larkin essentially made the left handed version of Raymond’s goal with a little more dangle and immediately grabbed the game deciding puck to give to Cossa. The mantelpiece is likely taped and sharpied.

This win was a huge relief. In fairness to Husso, he’s been playing well and the team can’t score. A bad first period pulled him from the net and Detroit gets a 6-5 shootout win. That has to be a bit souring. 12 saves on 14 shots was only good for a .857 sv% for the callup, but it’s a win. Buffalo is frustrated but it was inches away from being another frustration for Detroit.

Seider was feeling his oats. The remark about players safety comes from a hit that seemed clearly shoulder to head and knocked off a helmet. It’s a tossup as to whether there will be a call/fine/suspension because there is no consistency from DoPS. After becoming a Rugby fan, head contact is automatically reviewed and usually a penalty (at least in 4 nations). My guess is that Ruff and co expect something to be done. Apart from that, Seider was mixing it up. Very physical, very involved. Whatever he ate for pregame (hot wings?) stick with it. Just watch that shoulder.

It was good to see Debrincat score by using Detroit’s reputation of late as a fake. He walked in and the entire Buffalo team (and yours truly) was waiting for a pass. He got the backhand shot and it was a beautiful thing to see.

Let me know your thoughts, what you saw, and if Cossa should grab 1 more start before heading back.

1st Period goals:

It took 1:38 for Husso to give one up. This goal was on him, after some solid performances, unfortunately. Was redirected off Chiarot but the goalie left the top corner wide open on an off wing shot from a skill player who can make that shot. 1-0 BUF

At 4:05 Debrincat made the selfish play that the team needs people making. Buffalo was reading pass all the way and the cat marched in and backhanded after skating through the crease. Chiarot got some redemption keeping the puck alive. 1-1

Then at 4:46 Seider skates in on the forecheck, makes a back pass to Compher who finds Copp for his first in 16 games. 2-1 DET

At 10:25 after a failed power play by Detroit Buffalo ties it. 2-2

At 15:26 Buffalo takes the lead on a 6 on 5 delay for a Wings penalty. 3-2 BUF. Husso having a bad night.

Shots: 8-7 DET
Score: 3-2 BUF

2nd Period goals:

At 1:05 Raymond tied the game after taking a cross ice pass from Larkin on the rush. 3-3

At 2:26 buf regains lead. 4-3

Buf again at 9:46. 5-3

Shots: 20-17 DET
Score: 5-3 DET

3rd Period goals:

At 10:27 Copp scored his second of the night on a sequence that saw 3 or 4 chances with good pressure from Detroit. 5-4 DET

With 4:18 left Seider tied the game. He ripped a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot that went bar down.

Shots: 31-21 DET
Score: 5-5

Overtime:

Shots: 31-21 DET
Score: 5-5

Shoutout:

Thompson(BUF) - stopped
Raymond (DET) - scores on a nice backhand
Paterka (BUF) - stopped
Kane (DET) - missed
Tuch(BUF) - scores bar down
Larkin(DET) - scores

6-5 final - Detroit
