Golden Knights Got Too Golden

Who knew? There IS a such thing as too much gold.

When talks of an alternate jersey popped up, my hopes were for a black alternate with gold accents. That is something that would pop off the screen and work well with the white ice surface. Could I get what I wanted? No!

Owner Bill Foley and Adidas went full “Vegas” (not my Vegas) as we were told and spit out a golden, glittery travesty. The whole jersey has a glittery look to it. I get it. Bright lights, neon signs, showgirls, etc. Vegas is known for being over the top and this jersey was very close to being TOO over the top.

Fast forward to Thursday evening and the team pushed the limits, to TOO over the top. When Marc-Andre Fleury jumped on the ice for warmups, it felt like a good night of hockey on the way. Then Ryan Reaves knocked down the puck pyramid, hit the ice, and all of a sudden I felt like I was punched right in the face. Thankfully, it was a figurative punch and not a Reaves overhand right.

His long, luscious locks of hair were flowing behind him, as he warms up with no bucket. Stud move, no issues here. What began littering the ice behind him was a tragedy. The new gold helmets atop handfuls of Golden Knights’ heads were loud.

Too. Loud.

These helmets were a bad version of the Henderson Silver Knights’ slick chrome buckets. The Henderson helmets were already released AND they look better on the ice. The Golden Knights and their shiny gold monstrosities were set up for failure. The team wore them for the entirety of the game and consequently didn’t score for the entire 60 minutes.

A 1-0 loss is always ugly, but this one was actually ugly.

When teams have a bad game, they toss out the game tape and reset for the next one. Hopefully this morning they tossed the helmets and will return to the first place level of play we’ve seen this far this season. One thing’s for sure, it’s never dull following this team. Plus, we can’t forget about how the Reverse Retro jerseys from Tuesday’s win were as good as that game’s result.

Thursday night’s shutout loss can be directly pinned on those helmets. I expect the team to rebound gracefully in their next game, a Saturday tilt against their friends, the San Jose Sharks.
