The third mock Hockey Buzz mock draft driven by the readers and a few special guests kicked off last Monday. The first five were Alexis Lafreniere, Quinton Byfield, Tim Sturzle, Marco Rossi and Cole Perfetti. Kicking off the next five was Anton Lundell followed by Alexander Holtz, Lucas Raymond, Jaroslav Askarov and Jaime Drysdale. Jake Sanderson was the first pick in the next round of selections followed by Jack Quinn, Dawson Mercer Seth Jarvis, Ryan O'Rourke, Hendrix Lapierre, Dylan Holloway and Kaiden Guhle. The selection by Calgary, with deddie picking, is below with New Jersey, represented by redmonsters, on the clock and Columbus, represented by Thomas Townsend, on deck. Below is the voting poll, please weigh in with your view.

After this pick, the next pick will be posted around 6pm tonight. The following pick will be posted Sunday am. If any Rangers news breaks, I will post a blog on that. Following Sunday morning's pick, the next pick, which is the Rangers at 22, will be posted Tuesday am, as I am out of the pocket for the Jewish holiday.

As a reminder, for each pick, included should be: a) Selection and reasoning/scouting report, and, b) Alternatives considered (both players and trades). Please provide me via email your pick with the aforementioned information following the posting of the prior pick on the site. If I become aware of a pick or a few picks in a row, I will email you to help facilitate moving the mock draft along. I will post the blog with the pick and the voting poll within each blog. In addition, after each pick in the summary below, I have added in the % that approved the pick in the poll and total number of votes.

Overall Rules and Process

As mentioned previously, there is a little kicker. After the pick or trade is made, a poll will be posted to rate the selection or deal. If the majority of people like the pick or trade, that selection stands and it moves on to the next team’s picks. If not, the majority rules and that’s what happens with that team and pick. I have the last right of refusal to keep everything on the up and up and avoid ballot box stuffing.

My request to you is that you take this seriously and not make a mockery of the mock draft, because that would be an insult to the others who are participating and makes the whole process a sham. But by playing this out, we get to have healthy debate and conversation to remain engaged up and possibly beyond the draft. If teams make deals and they occur before a team’s selection is due, that deal will play a part as to when each person’s selection occurs.

Here how this will work:  the team’s selector will email me at [email protected] their pick, rationale and any alternatives for that selection. I will post that pick and rationale on the site and create a voting poll. That poll will likely include alternatives that were considered with each voter allowed to select one option.

With the 19th Overall Pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, the Calgary Flames, represented by deddie, select Braden Schneider, D, Brandon (WHL)

Rationale for the selection with scouting report along with alternatives considered (both players and trades):

After recently graduating four drafted players to the big club (Anderson, Mangiapane, Dube, Kylington) and only making 15 picks in the last 3 drafts, the Flames opt for the consensus can't miss prospect to restock their prospect cupboard. The big, strong, defence first, right shot defencemen looks like a lock to become a 2nd or 3rd pairing D man at the NHL level. Schneider put up 42 points (7G, 35A) to lead all Brandon blueliners last year but his real strength is his physical, defensive game. At 6-foot-2, 210 lbs, Schneider moves bodies in front of the net, is a punishing hitter and will log important minutes on the PK at the next level.

As one of the older and more mature players available in 2020, Schneider could provide the Flames a cost effective, 3rd pairing D man as early as next season.

Scouting reports:

Craig Button – TSN – A fiercely competitive, in-your-face player with a take-no-prisoners approach. He is a player opponents will have no joy facing. Has progressed significantly over three seasons in all areas. "Projection: No. 3/No. 4 Competitive Right Defenceman

Comparable: Jacob Trouba

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com -  "A two-way, right-shot defenseman capable of playing the power play and penalty kill with great competitiveness and smarts. He's a more physically developed player and finishes checks with authority in all areas of the ice."

Tony Ferrari - Dobber Prospects - "Braden Schneider is a good two-way defender who excels in his own end. He has very good defensive awareness and moves the puck up ice quite well. His offensive upside is a bit limited but he isn’t inept by any means."

Other Prospects Considered:
NOEL GUNLER, RIDLEY GREIG, CONNOR ZARY

Trade considered:
The Flames are likely interested in moving into the top 10 to get one of the 2020 drafts projected difference makers into their system. Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan & Noah Hanifin are on club friendly deals and are likely on the table if a hockey trade is out there in this unusual off season.

To Minnesota
Sean Monahan, Andrew Mangiapane, 2020 #19 overall pick, 2021 2nd round pick

To Calgary
Matt Dumba, Luke Kunin, 2020 #9 overall pick

Calgary adds the top 10 prospect they dearly need, a right shot C/RW with upside, a 2nd pairing RD with a good cap hit and term while assisting their expansion draft vulnerability at forward.

Minnesota adds a 1C with a good cap hit and term, a young 2 line LW with upside and two picks while solving their expansion draft vulnerability on defence.
