In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Adam Henrique's five-year, $5.85 million (annually) extension with the Anaheim Ducks.
Todd Cordell
I think it's too much term and money for Henrique.
His solid point totals are a byproduct of consistent ice time – at evens and on PP1 – as opposed to actually being efficient.
Henrique has averaged just 1.41 points per 60 minutes played at 5v5 over the last two seasons.
Some of his closest comparables during that time include Travis Zajac, Jason Chimera, J.G. Pageau and Daniel Winnik, among others. Not great!
The underlyings aren't encouraging, either, as Henrique's teams have controlled a lesser percentage of the shot attempts and expected goals with him on the ice over the last couple years.
I understand you have to pay a premium to keep established players – especially centers – from free agency but this is a lot to commit to an inefficient scorer who will find himself on the wrong side of 30 just a year into this deal.
James Tanner
This is almost six million annually for a guy who will be in his thirties for the majority of the contract. He has another year left on his deal so I don't know why the Ducks were in such a hurry to lock up a player who is just OK at best. I don't like the term or the cap hit here. This seems like the Ducks are pot committed after making a bad trade for Henrique and are extending him to make it look good. The cap space is better than a 30 year old Henrique. Bad move.
