Detroit Red Wings GM Dylan Larkin Ken Holland has re-signed RFA forward Dylan Larkin to a five-year contract extension with an average annual value of $6.1 million.

Larkin played in all 82 games for The Wings last season. His 63 points led the Wings in scoring.

Detroit selected Larkin with the 15th pick in the 2014 draft.

Move over Hank Zetterberg. Dylan Larkin is the new face of the Winged Wheel franchise.

There is a concern in Detroit that Zetterberg may have to hang up his skates due to his chronic back condition. Zetterberg reportedly has not been able to puch himself in the gym this summer because he is limited to what he can do from a physical fitness standpoint. The 37-year old future Hall of Famer has a big decision to make in the weeks to come. Will he retire or will he try to gut it out and play through the chronic pain?

Signing Larking was essential to the present and future success of the Red Wings. He is the face of teh franchise and is his team's best player.

Buffalo Sabres RFA winger Samson Reinhart and Toronto Maple Leafs center William Nylander wants what Larkin is having. Reinhart and Nylander are smelling ear to ear at Larkin’s $6.1M AAV.

Reinhart and Nylander wants what Larkin is having. Same term, same dollars.

Like Reinhart and Nylander, Larkin is looking for a long term contract in the $6M AAV neighborhood.

Do I see a carbon copy contract for Reinhart? Not on a long term contract.

No. Jason Botterill won’t go to $6.1M AAV times five seasons. Will he offer that AAV on a two year bridge deal? I’m sure he would do that.

I see Reinhart settling for $5.5M AAV to $5.75M AAV for five seasons.

I don’t see a $6M AAV for 8 seasons in Nylander’s future in Toronto, who must also re-sign Austin Matthews and Mitch Marner to mega deals. Matthews will earn $11M AAV and Marner will earn $8M AAV long term. John Tavares is already earning $11M AAV on a fat l, long term contract. Nylander may have to be traded to another NHL team to achieve his salary expectations of $6M plus AAV.

Contract Comps for Reinhart and Nylander:

Dylan Larkin’s $6.1M (x5) pact with the Red Wings.
Adam Henrique’s $5.85M (x 5) deal with the Ducks
James Neal’s $5.75M (x 5) contract with the Flames
Tomas Hertl’s $5.625M (x4) extension with the Sharks
J.T. Miller’s $5.25M AAV (x5) extension with the Bolts
Tom Wilson’s $5.17M (x 5) windfall with the Capitals.
Christian Dvorak’s $4.45M (x6) contract extension with the Desert Dogs.

Look inside the numbers of Larkin, Reinhart and Nylander and you will see that they all have identical offensive productions.

In 242 career NHL games with the Red Wings, Larkin has scored 56 goals and 84 assists for 140 points. He has scored 15 PPG and 41 PPP. Larkin led the Wings in scoring last season with 63 points.

In 249 career games with the Sabres, Reinhart has scored 65 goals and 75 assists for 140 points. Reinhart has scored 29 PPG and 48 PPP. Reinhart scored a career-high 25 goals and 25 assists last season. His 50-points scored last season was a career high for Reinhart.
