Life Without Koivu Begins Tonight

I have written many times in this blog about Mikko Koivu and the value that he brings to the Wild every day whether it be in practice or game he is the ultimate professional.

That said, there have been many times that it has also been said that the Wild need to temper down Koivu's offensive responsibilities and allow him to be more effective as the top tier shut down center and penalty killer. A third line role is better suited for Mikko at this point in his career and ultimately could add to his overall value.

Another point that has been brought up many times by yours truly along with the HB Wild community, is the need for a new voice and new direction for the team following the seemingly endless run of up and down, good but not great Minnesota Wild.

Well now it is thrust upon the Wild as Koivu is on the shelf for the remainder of the season with the torn ACL. So is Koivu "unreplaceable" as many think, or is this a great opportunity for someone else to jump in and step up?

There is no way to replace Koivu, but is there a silver lining to the Wild future?

It all begins tonight at home against the Oilers, and of course that means, Connor McDavid. Koivu's absence will be felt, but can't be an excuse. It should be a rallying cry for the youngsters, especially Luke Kunin and Joel Eriksson Ek, who got recalled from Iowa to take Koivu's place on the roster.

I am sure Paul Fenton has not slept much since receiving the news about his captain, and he is working to put the best product on the ice as the Wild push for the playoffs. The bug difference between what Fenton is doing and what the previous regime did, is it not just about this season with the moves being made.

Eyes on the future, but for the present Wild roster, the future is now.

It's Always Hockey Day in The State of Hockey!
