Max Domi, Canadiens Legend….

Max Domi has made Canadiens history.

The offseason trade of Alex Galchenyuk for Max Domi has already been deemed an overwhelming fleecing on the part of Marc Bergevin and Domi is the gift that keeps on giving so far this season.

Max Domi now has 24 points in his first 20 games as a Montreal Canadien, breaking Fern Majeau’s old record of 23 pts in his first 20 games as a Hab in the 1943-44 season. Domi’s point totals are actually the most in a players first 20 games as a Canadien since 1919-20 (as seen in the tweet below).

In acquiring Domi, Christmas came early in MTL. Not only has he embraced the culture, attitude, and pressure that comes with the MTL market, he has thrived on it. So much so that his apprenticeship at C last year in Arizona has made him an ideal #1C in Montreal (as I previously wrote he could be while everyone else was panning Bergevin and mocking him if he attempted to use him there).

In a single one for one hockey trade MTL moved on from a depreciating asset in Galchenyuk and acquired a player with Gallagher like tenacity that puts up points, plays effectively at C, and has allowed Drouin to play his natural position on the wing, helping his breakout campaign thus far (Drouin is on pace for almost 70 pts this season).

One trade fixed a disappointing draft pick, the Center position, and goal production.

I haven’t really seen many articles from mainstream sports outlets singing Bergevin’s praises for this trade, but realistically it’s a trade that just may put him in the running for GM of the year. It’s the other trade bringing in T Tatar (of which I gladly have eaten plenty of crow), OHL super star N Suzuki (Captain of the Owen Sound Attack, 17 Goals, 18 Assists, 21 games played), PLUS a 2nd round pick for Timmins and Co. that will win him the award…. IF the Habs make the playoffs.

No one can argue that these trades reshaped the Canadiens core and leadership group for the better. Better than better really. The team that for sure has some work to do on the LD position is sitting tied for 7th in the NHL in points because the team and systems work. The 2 decade void at C has been remedied and has made the previous trade of Sergachev for Drouin look a thousand times better now.

Max Domi helped make this happen.

Marc Bergevin made this happen.

Credit where credit is due. Kudos to the GM and kudos to the newest Canadiens record holder Max Domi.

Go Habs Go
