Nyquist Waits For The Other Shoe To Drop

Tense? Of course he is.

How could be not be?

With the NHL trade deadline just seven days away, Detroit Red Wings right-winger Gustav Nyquist was reluctant to discuss his future in Detroit.

“I don’t want to talk about this right now,” Nyquist admitted to Mlive.com, while also recognizing why it is a subject that will continue to generate conversation as the clock ticks down toward Monday’s 3 p.m. EST deadline.

Nyquist knows the deal - his contract is up at the end of this season and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent.

“It’s a little bit of a new situation for me, going into my last contract year,” Nyquist said. “So it’s a bit different. We’ve still got a week left, so we’ll see what happens.

In all likelihood, he knows that he will be dealt before Monday if the Wings can’t hammer out a new pact with him before then.

“Instead of saying too much or too little I’m just gonna go with no comment on it,” Nyquist said of negotiations with the Wings. “It has to work for either side. That’s about as much as I will say and we’ll see what happens.”

Armed with a no-movement clause in his current contract, Nyquist did acknowledge that he’d provided the Wings with a list of teams he’d be willing to go to in the event of a trade.

“I have my no-trade clause, so if I get traded and I’d obviously have to waive it for that team,” Nyquist said. “Then that would be a decision that I would have to make, too.”

Naturally, with his future at stake, it is difficult for Nyquist not to ponder potential scenarios as deadline day nears.

“For sure there’s a lot of thoughts that are going through your head,” Nyquist said. “It’s a process. We’ll take it one day at a time.

“I’m sure there will be more questions and talking about it. One day at a time here. There’s still a week left. It’s part of the business. It happens to everyone.”

The one person Nyquist does talk over the situation with on a regular basis is his wife Cecilia.

“I keep them, the closest friends and family, I keep them updated on stuff that’s going on,” Nyquist said. “In just a week we’ll have all the answers.”

The advice offered to Nyquist by Wings coach Jeff Blashill was to just play the game and let the chips fall where they may, though understandably, he recognizes human nature makes it so that this is a task that is easier said than done.

“I know when you play great hockey, you get tons of opportunities, you make more money, you stay in the league longer, life is awesome,” Blashill said. “That’s way better than if you let it affect you and you don’t play great hockey and all the sudden there’s less opportunities, which means less money, which means you’re not in the league, all those things.

“It’s the hardest thing to do but just control what you can control and play.”
