The United States will go into its quarterfinal meeting with Russia minus Dylan Larkin. In fact, no matter how far the Americans venture along the path toward a world championship, they will do so without Larkin.

USA and Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill confirmed in an early-morning text to Mlive.com that Red Wings center Larkin would be out the remainder of the tournament. Larkin blocked a shot in the first period of Team USA’s 3-0 loss to Canada in their final round-robin game on Tuesday and did not return to the game.

Blashill indicated that long-term effects from the injury were not a concern.

Larkin had 3-2-5 totals in seven games for the USA and was plus-one.

Red Wings center Luke Glendening will play for the USA today. He has two assists and a plus-two rating through seven games.

Mantha Suspended
Red Wings right-winger Anthony Mantha will miss Canada’s quarter-final game against Switzerland.

Mantha was handed a one-game suspension by the IIHF for a head check he delivered to Colin White in the game against the Americans.

Mantha is Canada’s leading scorer and fifth overall in the tournament with 7-5-12 totals in seven games. Canada won its pool with a 6-1 record.

Red Wings left-winger Tyler Bertuzzi will be available to suit up for Canada. So far, Bertuzzi has played four games. He’s still looking for his first point and is plus-one.

Hronek Shines
Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek has enjoyed an outstanding tournament and he will be seeking to help the Czech Republic defeat Germany in their quarterfinal match.

Hronek leads all rearguards in scoring at the world tourney with 3-7-10 totals through seven games. That puts him 10th overall in the scoring race. No other defenseman has accumulated more than seven points.

The 21-year-old Hronek has also displayed an irascible side on the ice in Slovakia. He leads the tournament with 22 penalty minutes. Mantha is second with 16 PIM.

When Detroit Were Champions
Should the Boston Bruins defeat the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup final, the city will simultaneously house the champions of the NHL, NFL and MLB. The Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2018 World Series and the New England Patriots downed the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

That hasn’t happened since 1935-36 and it was Detroit that was the city of champions back then. The Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs in the 1935 World Series. The Detroit Lions defeated the New York Giants in the NFL Championship Game. And in the spring of 1936, the Red Wings downed the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
