Quick Hits: July 6, 2022

1) Scouts Week on Flyers Daily continues today as Jason Myrtetus and I interview Flyers director of player personnel Alyn McCauley in a 38-minute episode of the podcast. Subjects covered include McCauley discussing the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the importance of prioritizing diversified skill sets in roster building, prospect development and the topic of young players in particular facing mental hurdles as well as physical challenges when coming back from a major injury, the work of developmental coaches and how they interact directly with players, and aspects from his own NHL playing career than McCauley has used to gain perspective in his post-career scouting and front office work in Hockey Ops.

Alyn is always a good interview subject. He brings a nuanced and articulate perspective to his thoughts on the game and is simultaneously both detail-oriented and big-picture focused in his outlook. It's not hard to imagine that the 45-year-old longtime pro scout and former player could eventually move up to a general manager role in the NHL if that's where his ambitions eventually lead him.

Wednesday's podcast also includes an update on the Alex DeBrincat rumors, which seem to be cooling down amid reports from Elliotte Friedman and Pierre LeBrun that the Flyers are not willing to offer the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 Entry Draft as part of a deal with Chicago for DeBrincat. To listen to the program, click here. Previously, Jason and I interviewed interviewed Flyers European scouting director Joakim Grundberg and the organization's primary Western Canada based scout Mark Greig.

On Thursday morning, we will run our 35-minute conversation with Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr as the final Scouts Week segment before the Draft begins in the evening.

2) During the first round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, there will be a live program on Flyers Radio 24/7 co-hosted by Brian Smith (who will be onsite in Montreal), Jason and me. We will, naturally, focus primarily on the Flyers' offseason and the fifth overall pick but there will also be commentary on the other picks that are made. After the Flyers make their first round pick, there will be a live interview with the player selected by Philadelphia after he's made available to speak to the media. I will post the link in tomorrow's blog.

3) On Tuesday, the Flyers released their 2022 preseason schedule, featuring three home games (all at the Wells Fargo Center) and three away games:

Saturday, September 24 vs. Boston 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, September 27 at Buffalo 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, September 28 vs. Washington 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 1 at Boston 1:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 2 at NY Islanders 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 4 vs. NY Islanders 7:00 p.m.

4) An update on Ivan Fedotov: Hockey News Hub, via Russia's Match TV channel, passed along the following reports on Fedotov over the last day. As always, take any news originating from Russian media outlets with a grain of salt.

5) Jean-Guy Gendron, one of the better goal-scorers in the earliest years of Flyers history, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. A native of Montreal, Gendron was a member of the Flyers' all-French-Canadian line with playmaking center Andre Lacroix and right winger Leon Rochefort. For more, click here.
