Quick Hits: October 2, 2018

1) All teams must file their opening-night rosters with the National Hockey League today by 5 p.m. EDT. The Flyers will learn if either Taylor Leier or Dale Weise are claimed off waivers. Depending on their clearance and whether the Flyers make any other roster moves or acquisitions, the Flyers have have to send one player or the other to the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms to start the season.

2) The Flyers will start the season with Michal Neuvirth, Alex Lyon, Corban Knight and Samuel Morin on the injured reserve kust. Rookie pro Pascal Laberge (hip surgery) will be designated on the injured non-roster list.

3) On the Flyers official website, I have authored a three-part season preview series. Part 1 looks at the Flyers' blueline. Part 2, which will go live later today, looks at the Flyers' goaltending situation and special teams. Part 3, which will run tomorrow, looks at the Flyers' forward corps.

4) Longtime Flyers left winger Scott Hartnell announced his retirement yesterday after 17 seasons in the NHL. He played 1,249 regular season games and 99 playoff games. He scored 327 regular season goals.

Hartsy played 517 regular season games (157 goals, 169 assists, 326 points, 908 PIM) as a Flyer, including seasons of 30 and 37 goals with five seasons of 20+ goals and four seasons of 24+ goals. As a Flyer, he played 75 playoff games (16 goals, 41 points, 112 PIM). He reached the Eastern Conference Final with the team in 2007-08 and the Stanley Cup Final in 2010.

Along with Danny Briere and Scott's close friend Kimmo Timonen, Hartnell was a big part of the Flyers immediate turnaround upon their arrival in the 2007 offseason.

The hard-charging, balance-challenged "Hartsy" was the left wing on three highly successful Flyers lines with different styles and chemistry: he played with Jeff Carter and Joffrey Lupul in 2007-08, Danny Briere and Ville Leino 2010 playoffs and 2010-11 season, and Claude Giroux and Jaromir Jagr in 2011-12.

A fan favorite in Philadelphia, Hartnell was also well-liked in the dressing room. He helped keep the other guys loose and didn't mind being a veteran foil to the head coach; taking some of the pressure off other players.

5) The 5th Annual Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) showcase will be held this month, with the main event featuring the Flyers Alumni Team playing Team AHA at Revolution Ice Gardens (1621 Mearns Rd, Warminster, PA) on Oct. 12 at 7:35 p.m. ET.

6) The Sixth Annual Faceoff Against Cancer, with proceeds directly benefiting selected local cancer patients, will be at Hatfield Ice (350 County Line Road, Colmar, PA) on Oct. 13.

7) Ed Snider Hockey Foundation is hosting a Chair Hockey Tournament on a vacant floor of the 1900 Market Street building, courtesy of Brandywine Realty Trust, on Thursday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. In chair hockey, participants sit on desk chairs in custom rinks and slide across the floor attempting to score goals.

Teams of six can enter for a minimum donation of $1,000 which includes the use of the office chairs, food drinks, prizes and celebrity appearances. All proceeds of the night benefit Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation’s educational and post-secondary scholarship programming. Flyers Hall of Fame members Bernie Parent, Joe Watson, and Brian Propp will serve as the honorary co “chairs” of the event.

8) Oct. 2 Flyers Alumni birthday: Gordie Roberts (1957).
