Quick Hits: October 30, 2020

1) NHL team training facilities are open to players during the offseason, in similar fashion to Phase 2 of the return-to-play plan during the 2019-20 season "pause" earlier this year. There are currently four Flyers players who have been working out in Voorhees: Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Tanner Laczynski, Carsen Twarynski and Samuel Morin (who has been in this area most of this year, including during last season's pause, rehabbing his knee after ACL repair surgery).

Morin was recently a guest of Flyers director of medical services Jim McCrossin and Flyers Alum player and longtime broadcaster Chris Therien on "the Sports Medical Forum" show that McCrossin and Therien co-host on YouTube. The topic of the episode -- which was the show's debut -- was ACL injuries and rehabilitation. Morin, unfortunately, has gotten to know quite a bit about that particular subject, having been through the process twice in a two-year span. Morin is now healthy again and feels fine.

Because the player has essentially missed the last two and three-quarter seasons due to a core muscle issue followed by the two ACL tears, the Flyers' plan for the 25-year-old defenseman is for him to go to Phantoms for much-needed extended playing time. This would require the player to pass through waivers but, given the sheer amount of time he has missed, the risk of a claim is likely low.

The second episode of McCrossin and Therien's show featured Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere as their guest. Lappy discussed the transition from being a longtime NHL player to a coach and staying active and fit in his 40s.

2) In the current episode of Jason Myrtetus' "Flyers Daily" show on the Flyers Broadcast Network, the host talks to head coach Alain Vigneault. Among a variety of topics, AV discusses his thoughts on the Flyers 2019-20 season, the playoffs and the offseason. The next episode will be a one-on-one conversation with top Flyers forward prospect Morgan Frost.

3) On Thursday, Hockey Canada today released its 2020-21 World Junior Championships Selection Camp roster, which will start in Red Deer, Alberta, on Nov. 16 and run through Dec. 16. With the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League shelved through the remainder of the 2020 calendar year and the QMJHL's Quebec-based teams temporarily in pause mode (with the exception of the Maritimes Division), there is an opportunity for the 46 invitees to have a more extensive camp together than would normally be the case.

There are two Flyers prospects attending the upcoming camp: right winger Tyson Foerster (Barrie Colts, OHL) and defenseman Mason Millman (Saginaw Spirit, OHL).

4) QMJHL: In a 4-3 home overtime loss to the Moncton Wildcats on Thursday evening, Flyers 2020 5th round pick Elliot Desnoyers earned a first period secondary assist for the Halifax Mooseheads. Desnoyers moved laterally with the puck inside the blueline and passed to teammate Justin Barron at the right point as Zachary L'Heureux got open in the lower left slot to receive a pass and redirect it home. Desnoyers finished the night with two shots on goal and went 15-for-32 on faceoffs. On Friday, the Mooseheads pay a visit to the Charlottetown Islanders.

5) SHL: Neither Linus Sandin (15:58 TOI) nor 2020 Flyers second-round pick Emil Andrae (minus one, just 1:22 TOI) got on the scoresheet in HV71's 3-2 win over Växjö on Thursday. Andrae was beaten in the slot by goal scorer Fredrik Karlström, who took a pass and re-directed it into the net at 7:19 of the first period. The young defenseman did not see a shift the rest of the way. This was the second straight game in which Andrae, who has been on the ice for nine opposition even strength goals through 12 games, has gotten very sparing ice time. The 18-year-old Andrae skated 6:07 against Leksand on Tuesday.

6) Recently retired power forward Chris Stewart, now a Flyers development coach, celebrates his 33rd birthday today.

7) Today in Flyers History: October 30, 1969

On this night in 1969, Flyers rookie Bobby Clarke scored his first career NHL goal. It came in his seventh career game. The Flyers and Rangers skated to a 3-3 tie at the Spectrum. Hinting at his future reputation for scoring in the clutch, it was the 20-year-old rookie from Flin Flon, Manitoba, who scored with 3:24 left in the third period to forge the tie after the Flyers were unable to protect an early 2-0 lead and found themselves trailing late in the game.

Set up by top-line center Andre Lacroix, Jean-Guy Gendron and Lew Morrison scored first period goals for Philadelphia to build a 2-0 lead before the Rangers struck for the next three goals. Bernie Parent stopped 32 of 35 shots to earn the tie. Eddie Giacomin turned back 31 of 34 for the Rangers.
