Quick Hits: July 17, 2021

1) The NHL deadline for teams to submit their protected player lists for the upcoming Expansion Draft is 5 p.m. EDT today. Starting today at 3 p.m. EDT, a moratorium goes into effect on trades trades, waivers and contract signings, which will run through July 22.

Trades can be completed and filed today prior to 3 p.m. EDT. There could be some last-moment moves involving Expansion Draft eligible players who are not on their current team's protection list.

2) If the Flyers were to sign veteran free agent defenseman Ryan Suter after he was bought out by the Minnesota Wild. it would involve realigning the defense corps. Suter is a left-side, left-handed shooting defenseman. The Flyers' needs are on the right side of the blue line, preferably with a right-handed shooter added to the mix. Travis Sanheim is capable of switching sides to play right defense if the Flyers needed to accommodate Suter, but it seems more likely right now that Suter signs elsewhere.

3) July 17 Flyers Alumni birthdays; Tommy Söderström (1969), Valeri Zelepukin (1968).
