Quick Hits: October 26, 2021
1) The Flyers held a practice at the FTC in Voorhees on Monday. Ryan Ellis participated in practice but was pre-planned to exit early. He is still officially on a day-to-day basis. After practice, the Flyers departed on a charter flight to Edmonton. The team will practice in Edmonton today in preparation for Wednesday's game against the Oilers. Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault said that he's optimistic that Ellis will be able to play in the next game but things would a bit clearer after practice based on how Ellis is feeling. If Ellis is unable to play, Nick Seeler will remain in the lineup and Justin Braun will be paired with Ivan Provorov.
2) Vigneault said that Carter Hart will start against the Oilers and Martin Jones will go the next night in Vancouver. Hart is a native of suburban Edmonton while Jones hails from Vancouver.
3) Although he is now over his bout with COVID-19, Canadian travel restrictions prohibited Flyers forward Patrick Brown from traveling to Canada with the team on Monday. He will be far enough removed from his first positive test for coronavirus to be permitted to travel to Canada later in the week. An American citizen, Brown will join the Flyers in Edmonton on Wednesday. Unfortunately, he won't be able to get a direct flight. He'll have to fly to Toronto and take a connecting commercial flight to the Alberta city.
4) Today in Flyers History: Parent and Plante Duel to Scoreless Deadlock
When future Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent was growing up in the Rosemont section of Montreal, Jacques Plante's sister lived near the family's home. Parent and his friends idolized the star goaltender. They were too afraid to approach Plante directly, however, when he would periodically make a visit to his sister's home. Instead, they would hide behind the bushes to get a glimpse of the Montreal Canadiens star walking inside.
Years later, when Parent was traded by the Flyers to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1970-71 season, Plante became his teammate. Despite a reputation for being a loner, Plante took a liking to Parent and mentored him to go from being a good NHL goaltender to one of the all-time greats. In the late 1970s, Plante became a part-time goaltending coach for the Flyers; the first goalie coach in franchise history.
One season before both players were united in Toronto, Parent's Flyers took on Plante's St. Louis Blues at the Spectrum on Oct. 26, 1969. The teams played to a 0-0 tie. The 24-year-old Parent stopped all 25 shots he faced, while the 40-year-old Plante turned back all 26 shots fired on his net.
A crowd of 13,032 witnessed the classic goaltending duel at the Spectrum.
