The Carolina Hurricanes signed two players to entry-level contracts this week and also released their roster for training camp. Here’s the weekly recap:

HURRICANES RELEASE TRAINING CAMP ROSTER

The Hurricanes released their training camp roster, which features 24 forwards, 10 defensemen and four goalies. Here’s the full roster:

FORWARDS: Sebastian Aho, Jeremy Bracco, David Cotton, Jason Cotton, Ryan Dzingel, Jesper Fast, Warren Foegele, Morgan Geekie, Seth Jarvis, Steven Lorentz, Jordan Martinook, Stelio Mattheos, Max McCormick, Brock McGinn, Martin Necas, Nino Niederreiter, Jamieson Rees, Sheldon Rempal, Drew Shore, Spencer Smallman, Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen, Vincent Trocheck

DEFENSE: Jake Bean, Haydn Fleury, Gustav Forsling, Jake Gardiner, Dougie Hamilton, Joey Keane, Brett Pesce, Joakim Ryan, Brady Skjei, Jaccob Slavin

GOALIES: Antoine Bibeau, Petr Mrazek, Alex Nedeljkovic, James Reimer

CLARK BISHOP PLACED ON WAIVERS

The Hurricanes placed forward Clark Bishop on waivers, after he was not invited to the team’s training camp. Bishop cleared waivers the next day.

HURRICANES SIGN SETH JARVIS AND JAMIESON REES TO ENTRY-LEVEL CONTRACTS

The Carolina Hurricanes signed both Seth Jarvis and Jamieson Rees to entry-level contracts this week. Jarvis was selected 13th overall by the Hurricanes in this year’s draft, while Rees was selected in the second round of last year’s draft.

WJC UPDATE

Only two Hurricanes prospects remain at the World Juniors heading into the semifinals. Ryan Suzuki and Canada will face Vasiliy Ponomarev and Russia, with the winner going on to the Gold Medal Game. Noel Gunler and Zion Nybeck had their tournaments end yesterday, with Sweden’s loss to Finland in the quarterfinals. Here are each player’s stats from the tournament:

Noel Gunler (SWE): 4G, 1A (5GP)
Vasiliy Ponomarev (RUS): 3G, 0A (5GP)
Ryan Suzuki (CAN): 2G, 1A (5GP)
Zion Nybeck (SWE): 0G, 1A (5GP)

As for our poll questions this week, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out:

QUESTION: When do you think Seth Jarvis will make the jump to the NHL?

(Votes: 33)

2022-23 season or later: 52%
2021-22 season: 39%
2020-21 season: 9%

I agree that Jarvis is a couple years away and probably won’t be up with the Hurricanes until at least 2022-23. That said, we’ll see how he progresses this season and maybe we see him push for a spot next year.

QUESTION: What do you think Jamieson Rees’ long-term role will be with the Hurricanes?

(Votes: 48)

Middle-six forward: 40%
Bottom-six forward: 31%
Doesn’t make/stay in the NHL: 19%
Top-six forward: 10%

While I’m not betting on Rees to become a top-six forward, I was pretty surprised to see how few people think he will develop into a top-six role. He's coming off a huge year in the OHL and Rees could be someone that surprises people.

QUESTION: Do you think Clark Bishop will earn a full-time role with the Hurricanes at some point?

(Votes: 80)

No: 89%
Yes: 11%

I think it’s pretty clear with the waivers before training camp that Bishop isn’t necessarily viewed as key for the team’s future. While he’s played some games with Carolina in the past, he’s probably not going to get into a whole lot more going forward.

QUESTION: Who do you think will lead the Hurricanes in points this season?

(Votes: 69)

Sebastian Aho: 49%
Andrei Svechnikov: 43%
Teuvo Teravainen: 4%
Someone else: 3%

I also agree that it’ll be Aho or Svechnikov but that’s quite an unexpected gap for Teravainen. He was three points off the team lead in points last season and finished ahead of Svechnikov.

QUESTION: Do you believe the Hurricanes will finish ahead of the Blackhawks in the 2021 standings?

(Votes: 106)

Yes: 90%
No: 10%

As detailed in the article, the Hurricanes do have an advantage on the Blackhawks at every position. I’d be pretty surprised if Chicago ended the season ahead of Carolina this season.
