The San Jose Sharks placed forward Ivan Chekhovich on waivers earlier this week, for the purpose of a buyout and contract termination.

Chekhovich is 22 years old and was selected by the Sharks in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL. The forward played four games with the Sharks this season, managing one assist, but spent the majority of the year split between the AHL and KHL. According to Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Chekhovich is likely to return to the KHL.

It’s somewhat disappointing to see Chekhovich heading back to Russia, as he did project as a decent prospect and was already getting into games with the Sharks. While it’s hard to say what his ceiling is, San Jose’s prospect pool is thin and Chekhovich could’ve potentially ended up earning a spot with the team at some point.
