The Carolina Hurricanes made 13 picks in the 2021 NHL Draft this past weekend, all taking place in rounds 2-7.

The Hurricanes’ goal was clearly to acquire as many picks as possible, as they made six separate trades during the two-day draft. I won’t list them out individually, but here’s a recap of which picks came in and went out, when all was said and done.

ACQUIRED:

2nd Round, 40th Pick
2nd Round, 44th Pick
2nd Round, 51st Pick
3rd Round, 83rd Pick
4th Round, 109th Pick
5th Round, 136th Pick
5th Round, 147th Pick
6th Round, 160th Pick
2022 3rd Round Pick

TRADED:

D- Jake Bean
1st Round, 27th Pick
2nd Round, 59th Pick
3rd Round, 91st Pick
4th Round, 123rd Pick

Carolina then made the following picks:

2nd Round, 40th Overall: Scott Morrow (D)
2nd Round, 44th Overall: Aleksi Heimosalmi (D)
2nd Round, 51st Overall: Ville Koivunen (F)
3rd Round, 83rd Overall: Patrik Hamrla (G)
3rd Round, 94th Overall: Aidan Hreschuk (D)
4th Round, 109th Overall: Jackson Blake (F)
5th Round, 136th Overall: Robert Orr (F)
5th Round, 147th Overall: Justin Robidas (F)
6th Round, 170th Overall: Bryce Montgomery (D)
6th Round, 187th Overall: Nikita Quapp (G)
7th Round, 200th Overall: Yegor Naumov (F)
7th Round, 209th Overall: Nikita Guslistov (F)
7th Round, 219th Overall: Joel Nystrom (D)

It was an interesting strategy to acquire as many picks as possible but we’ll see how it works out. Quantity isn’t necessarily better than quality and considering the Hurricanes are looking to contend, it could have been more worthwhile to take fewer picks in a better position, to fill in any remaining cracks in the roster. Regardless, they picked a strategy and stuck to it.
