The Los Angeles Kings had their seven-game winning streak snapped last night, falling 3-2 to the Winnipeg Jets in overtime.

The Jets opened the scoring about two minutes into the game, as nobody picked up Kyle Connor in front and he got a couple chances, burying a rebound to put the Jets up 1-0. However, Carl Grundstrom would tie the game just a couple minutes later, coming down the wing and putting an excellent shot past Connor Hellebuyck. The Kings stepped up their play from there and were hard on the forecheck to create some turnovers, but the frame ended 1-1.

The Kings took over in the second period, outshooting the Jets by a huge 10-2 margin. Late in the frame, Brendan Lemieux would head to the net and tap in a rebound off a shot from Blake Lizotte, to give the Kings a 2-1 lead.

In the third period, however, Winnipeg was able to limit chances for the Kings and generate some offense. Dylan DeMelo was able to tie the game with under seven minutes to go, after receiving a pass from Andrew Copp on a shorthanded rush and beat Cal Petersen through the five-hole.

The game went to overtime and in the extra frame, Nikolaj Ehlers fed Mark Scheifele a pass for a quick one-timer, which beat Petersen to give the Jets the win.

Despite the disappointing outcome, it was a strong game for the Kings. The bottom-six was great, generating a bunch of quality chances off the rush and drove a lot of the team’s offense. That said, the second line was fairly invisible and didn’t have much of a positive impact.

The Kings also did quite a good job limiting chances for a Winnipeg forward group that’s very capable of scoring goals. The shorthanded goal was avoidable but overall, the Kings’ defensive effort put them in a position to win.

The Kings will now return home for a seven-game homestand.
