The Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Brendan Lemieux from the New York Rangers yesterday, in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this year’s NHL Draft.

Lemieux began his career with the Winnipeg Jets, before being dealt to the Rangers two years ago. This is his third full NHL season and with the Rangers this year, he scored two goals and seven points in 31 games. He’s scored a total of 21 goals and 43 points in 162 career NHL games.

He has another year remaining on his contract, which carries a $1.55 million AAV, and will be a restricted free agent once the deal expires.

ANALYSIS

In terms of the price, I think the Kings are getting pretty decent value here. Lemieux is a bottom-six forward who’s still just 25 years old and can put up decent numbers, given his role. A fourth-round pick is a fairly low price to pay, especially given the number of picks the Kings still have in the bank for this year's draft.

That said, the Kings have a surplus of young forwards already, with more on the way. I question whether it was worth it to add immediate help when they’re still getting a grasp on what they have in other players.

Regardless, Los Angeles didn't give up much, making this a pretty low-risk deal, and we’ll see have to see how Lemieux fits with the Kings.
