The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they’ve signed brothers David and Jason Cotton. Both played in the NCAA, with David playing for Boston College and Jason coming from Sacred Heart University. In this article, we’ll be taking a quick break from player profiles to highlight the brothers.

Of the two, David is certainly the player to keep an eye on. He’s still just 22 years old and was the captain at Boston College this year, where he scored 39 points in 32 games. He’s a six-foot-two center and played in the USHL for a year before heading to Boston College. He was selected by the Hurricanes in the sixth round of the 2015 draft and also attended Carolina's prospect camp in both 2018 and 2019.

For reference, his point totals this season are about the same as those of his Boston College teammate, Alex Newhook, the 16th overall pick in the 2019 draft and higher than those of another teammate, Matthew Boldy, the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft. Keep in mind though, Cotton is four years older than both Boldy and Newhook.

His brother, Jason, is 25 years old and was the captain at Sacred Heart University this year. He’s listed as six-foot-three and scored 20 goals and 37 points in 34 games this year.

Truthfully, these aren’t outstanding numbers for a 25-year-old in the NCAA but in all fairness, I’ve only seen his highlights of him and have a very small sample size to work with as I write this.

I imagine the brothers were a package deal and while I wouldn’t get overly hopeful as to them becoming impact players with the Hurricanes, nevertheless, adding a couple quality NCAA players to the organization to increase forward depth is never a bad thing.
