The Carolina Hurricanes opened their road trip with a victory, picking up a decisive win over the Winnipeg Jets last night.

While the final score was only 4-2, it doesn’t do justice to how good of a game the Hurricanes played. They opened the scoring 30 seconds in off a shot from Jaccob Slavin and dominated the first period. The Hurricanes outshot the Jets 15-5, and it’s pretty shocking they were only up by a goal.

Sebastian Aho jammed in a loose puck to increase the lead early in the second period, but the Jets managed to claw back. First, Nikolaj Ehlers cut the lead in half, scoring off a nice pass from Paul Stastny. Then later in the frame, Pierre-Luc Dubois made a great play to tip in a shot between his legs to tie the game. Carolina answered quickly after that though, as Martin Necas scored a power play goal on a wild scramble, to send the Hurricanes into the intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Carolina took back their two-goal lead early in the third period, with Vincent Trocheck knocking in a loose puck on another power play. The teams combined for only 10 shots in the frame, as the Hurricanes hung on for the win.

It was an impressive win, given how much the Hurricanes controlled the game, especially through the first 40 minutes. Even in the third period though, they did a great job limiting Winnipeg’s chances, with the Jets managing just 18 goals in the game overall.

The Hurricanes have four games to go on their road trip, which will take place over the next six days – and the competition only gets tougher. They’ll face the Calgary Flames tomorrow, followed by the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday and after a matchup against the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, they’ll take on the Minnesota Wild to close out the road trip on Tuesday.
