The Carolina Hurricanes fell to the New York Rangers in Game 4 of their second round series today, with the series now even at 2-2.

It wasn’t a great opening period for Carolina, being outshot 12-8. Then with about 6:30 to go in the frame, Andrew Copp found Frank Vatrano with a nice cross-ice pass on a power play and Vatrano buried it, putting the Rangers ahead. Then only about two minutes later, Ryan Lindgren’s shot went in off Adam Fox, increasing New York’s lead to 2-0, heading into the first intermission.

The Hurricanes did come out better in the second period, getting their share of chances but just weren't able to capitalize. However, with just over three minutes to go, Antti Raanta couldn’t hang onto Ryan Lindgren’s shot and Mika Zibanejad followed up to tap it in, putting the Rangers up 3-0.

The Hurricanes got one back about a third of the way into the final frame, with Teuvo Teravainen taking a pass from Sebastian Aho in the slot and roofing a shot past Igor Shesterkin. However, Andrew Copp extended New York's lead back to three goals about five minutes later, burying a pass off a rush from Ryan Strome, with the Rangers holding on for a 4-1 win after that.

Once again we saw a scrum at the end of the game, involving Max Domi, Ryan Reaves, Ian Cole, K’Andre Miller and others.

So the Hurricanes are now 0-5 on the road in the postseason and blew two opportunities in New York to take a huge series lead. Home ice advantage has been far more important than expected and it’s now up to Carolina to improve to 7-0 at home in order to pull back ahead in the series.

The Hurricanes also continued to miss some great chances and in their two games in New York, they scored two goals on 75 shots. You can't necessarily fault the effort, but they need to be able to bury some of those opportunities.

Carolina returns home for Game 5 on Thursday, where they’ll try to regain the series lead.
