The Carolina Hurricanes dropped their second game of the season last night, losing to the San Jose Sharks by a score of 5-2. Here’s the game recap.

Evander Kane opened the scoring about half way through the first period, when a point shot was blocked and fell right in the slot, then Kane buried it from in close. This is just a lost puck battle as none of Joel Edmundson, Martin Necas or Brett Pesce got to the puck before Kane. The shot came from a good location but James Reimer was far too deep. Warren Foegele was close to tying it for Carolina off a rebound about a minute later but Martin Jones made a nice sliding save.

Dougie Hamilton would tie it shortly after though, getting time with the puck in the slot and beating Jones blocker side. The Sharks had a goal called back later in the period for a high stick then Evander Kane just about put the Sharks ahead but Reimer made a great glove save on a quality chance from right in front.

The Sharks eventually did take the lead on a power play right after, when Evander Kane one-timed a blocked shot, leaving Reimer with no chance. Before the period was out, Kane continued his dominance, tipping in an excellent pass from Brent Burns to give San Jose a 3-1 lead. Despite all of this, the Hurricanes outshot the Sharks 16-7 in the opening period.

The Hurricanes got quite a few good chances in the second period but Jones was very good. Warren Foegele then had a brutal turnover to Barclay Goodrow with about five minutes left in the period, which Barclay Goodrow took advantage of, coming down the wing and beating Reimer under the arm.

Erik Haula would deflect a goal in during the third period but Tomas Hertl added an empty-netter to seal a Sharks win.

It’s not like the Hurricanes didn’t get chances here– they outshot San Jose 38-22 and Martin Jones had to be superb.

While James Reimer can’t be faulted for most of the goals, he didn’t have a great night and he has to stop more than 17 of 21 shots.

Carolina’s next game comes tomorrow when they face the Anaheim Ducks.
