After several close games, the Anaheim Ducks finally broke their six-game losing streak yesterday, picking up a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Over the course of the week, we saw some great efforts by the Ducks but the team just couldn’t secure a win. In Tuesday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets, the Ducks were in control for the first 40 minutes of the game, outshooting Winnipeg 28-16 after the first two periods. With a one-goal lead late in the game though, the Ducks surrendered two goals in 19 seconds with under a minute and a half left, to lose 4-3 in regulation.

Then against the Buffalo Sabres, the Ducks were the better team once again, and battled back from a three-goal deficit to tie the game. They limited Buffalo to a single shot in the third period but with a strong performance by Craig Anderson, the Ducks couldn’t capitalize on their chances in regulation and the Sabres took an overtime win.

For the third loss of the week and sixth in a row, the Ducks fell 5-4 to the Vegas Golden Knights in a shootout on Friday. The Ducks were outplayed early on and eventually found themselves trailing 4-1, but then mounted a huge third period comeback to send the game to a shootout. While the Ducks once again couldn’t get the extra point, it was great to see Anaheim fight back to tie it up.

Then yesterday, the Ducks faced the Montreal Canadiens, where the team finally broke their losing streak. Anaheim had a great game, holding a lead through a good portion of the game and also keeping the Canadiens to just 18 shots total.

The most notable moment to come out of the game though was Ryan Getzlaf picking up an assist on Troy Terry’s go-ahead goal in the third period. With the assist, Getzlaf passed Teemu Selanne to become the franchise’s all-time leader in points, at 989.

Despite a series of losses, the Ducks have had a stretch of quite a few solid games. Over their four games last week, they outshot their opponents 136-114, with two of their three losses coming in either overtime or a shootout.

So while Anaheim may not have picked up a ton of points over the stretch, they were certainly close games and it gives reason to be optimistic about the team being more competitive this season.
