The Anaheim Ducks’ training camp started yesterday, with a roster that featured 26 forwards, 13 defensemen and five goalies. Here’s the full roster, along with some thoughts on which players we can expect to make the final roster and taxi squad.

FORWARDS (26): Andrew Agozzino, David Backes, Sam Carrick, Max Comtois, Chase De Leo, Nicolas Deslauriers, Ryan Getzlaf, Derek Grant, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Danton Heinen, Adam Henrique, Max Jones, Jack Kopacka, Vinni Lettieri, Isac Lundestrom, Sonny Milano, Antoine Morand, Jacob Perreault, Andrew Poturalski, Rickard Rakell, Carter Rowney, Jakob Silfverberg, Sam Steel, Troy Terry, Brayden Tracey, Trevor Zegras

DEFENSE (13): Simon Benoit, Kodie Curran, Christian Djoos, Jamie Drysdale, Cam Fowler, Brendan Guhle, Jani Hakanpaa, Jacob Larsson, Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson, Josh Mahura, Kevin Shattenkirk, Andy Welinski

GOALIES (5): Lukas Dostal, Olle Eriksson-Ek, John Gibson, Ryan Miller, Anthony Stolarz

For the forward group, we can bet the following (12) players will have roster spots: Backes, Deslauriers, Getzlaf, Grant, Heinen, Henrique, Jones, Milano, Rakell, Rowney, Silfverberg and Steel. On top of that, both Max Comtois and Troy Terry are in good positions to win a spot in camp as well. The x-factor will be Trevor Zegras, who’s currently competing in the World Juniors. Zegras could potentially make the roster, which would likely bump one of the players listed above off of the main roster.

There are three other forwards who could look to earn a spot on the taxi squad as well, which would be Agozzino, Carrick and Lettieri, given that each forward has some recent NHL experience. It’s unlikely that any of De Leo, Groulx, Kopacka, Lundestrom, Morand, Perreault, Poturalski or Tracey would make the team out of camp.

The battle on the blue line is going to be very interesting as well. Cam Fowler, Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson and Kevin Shattenkirk will make up Anaheim’s top-four but then what happens after that is anyone’s guess. Jamie Drysdale, who’s at the World Juniors right now, isn’t likely to start the season with the Ducks and neither is Simon Benoit, however, there are seven other defensemen who could realistically win a spot on the roster/taxi squad.

Kodie Curran, Christian Djoos and Jacob Larsson are probably the three most likely players to end up with lineup/roster spots, but Brendan Guhle and Josh Mahura could potentially win a spot with a strong performance in training camp. I think there’s a chance we could even see Jani Hakanpaa and/or Andy Welinski on the taxi squad as well.

In net, we know that John Gibson and Ryan Miller will be Anaheim’s goaltending tandem once again this season, however, they’ll still need one more goalie for the taxi squad. I’d bet that goalie will be Anthony Stolarz, who already has some NHL experience and performed well in the AHL last season. This would also leave a spot open in the AHL for Lukas Dostal, who could be paired with Olle Eriksson-Ek in San Diego.

Here’s today’s poll question (results and discussion will be posted in a future article):

Will Trevor Zegras spend the majority of the 2020-21 season in the NHL?
Yes
No
