Hey, some actual hockey news!

On Tuesday, the Bruins signed goalie Jeremy Swayman to an Entry Level Contract according to the University of Maine.

The 21-year old Swayman was drafted by the Bruins in the 4th round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, and just completed his third season at the University of Maine. In three seasons with the Blackbears, Swayman compiled a 2.60 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.

This past season was by far Swayman’s best, finishing his final season in Hockey East with a 2.27 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage and three shutouts. The native of Anchorage, Alaska led the Hockey East in both goals-against average and save percentage.

Swayman appeared in 27 of Maine’s 34 games, helping lead the Blackbears to a 18-11-5 record, while finishing fourth in Hockey East.

On Tuesday, Swayman was also named winner of the 98th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.

Previous winners include Jimmy Vesey, (2015 & 2016 Harvard) Johnny Gaudreau, (2014 Boston College) Matt Gilroy, (2009 Boston University) Brian Gionta, (2001 Boston College) Mike Mottau (1999 & 2000 Boston College) and Chris Drury (1998) Boston University).

With backup goalie Jaroslav Halak set to become an unrestricted free agent whenever the 2019-20 season concludes, and Tuukka Rask a pending UFA in the summer of 2021 Swayman inserts himself as a potential replacement for either Halak or Rask somewhere down the road.

Swayman will join prospects Dan Vladar and Kyle Keyser in the mix, creating some more internal competition for playing time at both the NHL and AHL levels.
