The New Jersey Devils recently signed Fabian Zetterlund and Mikhail Maltsev to entry-level contracts.
They might soon ink another forward prospect – their best one (at least until late June), at that – as Jesper Boqvist appears close to putting pen to paper on his deal.
Boqvist, 20, is coming off a very strong season in the SHL. He averaged .67 points per game, which is more than notables like William Karlsson, Andreas Johnsson, Elias Lindholm, Jakob Silfverberg, and Marcus Johansson mustered at the same point in their careers.
What's most encouraging is a lot of Boqvist's production came at 5v5. He finished 2nd in the league in 5v5 scoring, which is extremely impressive for a player of his age.
Boqvist, best known for his shiftiness, creativity, and puck skills, clearly has a lot of skill and his production reflects as much. It's not unreasonable to think he is ready to compete for – if not earn – an NHL job as soon as this fall, so it's no surprise getting him under contract is a priority.
Assuming the Devils select Jack Hughes next month, Boqvist seems destined for the wing should he play his way onto the roster.
