Capitals stocking up on goalies - Copley Extended |

The Washington Capitals announced they have extended goaltender Pheonix Copley for 3 years at $3.3M according to the teams' twitter account.
General Manager Brian MacLellan announced the deal at a time when the Capitals have a plethora of good goalies under contract. At only a $1.1M cap hit starting next season, the contract is very serviceable for a back-up goaltender.
The native of North Pole, Alaska had a long winding road to reach the NHL. Even being traded by the Capitals once in the Oshie trade before being re-acquired. Allowing only 2 or fewer goals in more than half his starts and having had a personal 7-game winning streak, the 6' 4" goalie has shown he can be counted on in short bursts at least.
The deal will now give the Caps some leeway while making decisions on contracts for other goalies coming. Obviously, the most intriguing contract extension possibility still lies with current stalwart Braden Holtby. The former Vezina winner's current $6.1m cap hit per year contract is up at the end of next season.
Both Vitek Vanecek (AHL All-Star) and Ilya Samsonov (Caps 1st rd 2015) have been playing well in AHL Hershey this season too.
