The morning after his team was pumped 7-3 on home ice by the lowly Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres GM Jason Botterill broke the proverbial ice sheet that has enveloped Lake Erie this week.

Sabres fans have been begging Botterill to make a move to correct the course of his team’s recent 8-17 losing streak. Today, Botterill did just that.

Moments before their 11:15 AM practice session, the Sabres placed winger Remi Elie on waivers. This roster move will open up a roster spot for Notterill to call up a forward from AHL Rochester once Elie is either claimed or clears waivers on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Amerks call up will have to score and play the defensive side of the puck. Danny O’Regan leads the Amerks forwards with 17 goals while C.J. Smith has 16 and Victor Olofsson has 15 goals.

There are other notable absentees from Sabres’ Saturday skate.

Defenseman Matt Hunwick not skating.
