In this edition of the hotstove, we share our midseason picks for the Jack Adams.

There are a lot of excellent candidates – Bill Peters, Mike Babcock, etc. – but my choice is Jon Cooper.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are absolutely steamrolling teams right now. They lead the league in wins (6), points (10), and goal differential (+21) by substantial margins. They have fantastic underlying numbers. They're great at 5v5, on the power play, everywhere. They look borderline unbeatable.

Yes, Cooper has a ton of talent to work with. Perhaps more than anybody. But he's certainly making the most of it.

Generally, voters favor coaches of middle-tier teams as opposed to high-end but I don't always agree with that. Doing great things with a great roster should not be worth any less than doing good things with a good roster.

Trevor Shackles

I'll go with Bill Peters for the Flames. This award is never given to the actual best coach in the league at the time, but it's essentially become an award for coaches who took a non-playoff team into the playoffs. The Flames had some hope of making the playoffs this season, but the fact that they're first in the West is incredibly impressive. It's hard to know the exact impact coaches have on a team, and it seems like there are plenty of solid candidates out there. However, you can't go wrong with voting for Peters.

Peter Tessier

Well do you go with the coach who has the best team but maybe also the best roster or the one who has taken a team with a mediocre or questionable roster to unexpected results.

So do you think Jon Cooper is deserving despite the fact that his team is STACKED? Should Montreal be close by the time voting happens should Claude Julien deserve some attention and praise? What about Bednar in Colorado? I think the one coach that might get some notice is Bill Peters in Calgary. While having a great roster he also has it playing very well and a dangerous opponent to any team. If I had a half season vote it would go to Peters because there isn't much to dislike about the Flames right now.
