Quick Hits: December 5, 2018

1) On Wednesday, the Flyers (11-12-2) will have their third and final practice day at the Skate Zone in Voorhees in advance of playing the Columbus Blue Jackets (15-10-2) at the Wells Fargo Center. Practice time is 10:30 a.m. ET.

Newly hired 30-year veteran NHL assistant coach Rick Wilson, whose addition to the staff as the Flyers' defense coach was announced on Tuesday morning, will be on the ice with the team. Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said after Tuesday's practice that it was himself who reached out first to Wilson to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement following the Flyers' dismissal of Gord Murphy as an assistant coach. "Wils" previously worked under Fletcher in Minnesota. He spent the last two seasons working with head coach Ken Hitchcock in St. Louis and back in Dallas (where they'd won a Stanley Cup together during Wilson's previous 15-year stint with the Stars) before retiring after the 2017-18 season.

On Tuesday night, the host Blue Jackets built a 4-1 lead over the Calgary Flames only to see Calgary come back and send Columbus down to a 9-6 defeat. Cam Atkinson scored a hat trick in a losing cause.

2) At 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Flyers will hold a press conference at the Skate Zone to formally introduce Chuck Fletcher as the team's new general manager. Fletcher will have the opportunity to expand upon some of the topics he covered in a relatively brief (ca. 10-minute) conference call with reporters on Monday as well to address some other topics.

3) Thursday night's game at the Wells Fargo Center will be 90s Night. There will be a T-shirt Giveaway and 90s-themed game presentation and music. There will also be a special article on the Flyers official website that I authored: 90 Facts about the Flyers in the 90s. Each number on the list is tied to a specific stat, jersey number or other fact with a connection to that specific number (for example, fact 7 notes the retirement of Bill Barber's No. 7 jersey on Oct. 7, 1990 while fact 71 recounts the Flyers 7-1 opening night win at the Montreal Forum to start the 1995-96 season.

4) Earlier this week, Hockey Canada announced the roster for its World Junior Championships selection camp. Two Flyers are in the pool of hopefuls: 2017 first-round pick Morgan Frost (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, OHL) and 2017 second-round pick Isaac Ratcliffe (Guelph Storm, OHL). Frost is leading the Ontario League in scoring with 55 points (19 goals and a league-high 36 assists) in 29 games. Ratcliffe has 19 goals, 33 points and 48 penalty minutes in 27 games.
