Wrapup: Flyers Come up Empty in 3-0 Loss to Devils

Five goal-post hits, a disallowed power play goal and an injury to their starting goaltender punctuated a very frustrating 3-0 loss by the Philadelphia Flyers to the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night. The Flyers were the better team for the first 35 minutes or so but generated less later as Jersey stepped up its own game.

Joey Anderson (1st) Kyle Palmieri (11th) scored for New Jersey. Blake Coleman earned two assists and then scored an empty net goal (6th). Keith Kinkaid notched a 29-save shutout for the Devils.

Brian Elliott got injured on New Jersey's second goal. He stopped 23 of 25 shots before leaving the game. Cal Pickard finished out the game.

The Devils opened the scoring at 3:45 of the first period. A Christian Folin breakout pass to Nolan Patrick was on the mark but the Flyers center got stripped of the puck at the blueline. The Devils managed to get onside. Anderson fired through Folin's legs from the deep slot and past Elliott at 3:45 for 1-0 NJ lead. The assists went to Brett Seney and Blake Coleman.

The Flyers played into a lot of tough luck in the first period. Shots were 10-10 but attempts were 26-15 in the Flyers' favor. Philly hit the post four times -- Travis Sanheim, Scott Laughton, Nolan Patrick and Travis Konecny -- and also had a would-be power play goal by Shayne Gostisbehere disallowed for goaltender interference (incidental contact) by James van Riemsdyk. The Flyers challenged the ruling but the call stood after a brief replay delay.

Both teams had multiple high-quality scoring chances in the second period. The Flyers had the higher volume for the first 12 minutes or so but the Devils asserted themselves over a subsequent stretch of about six minutes. Second period shots ended up 10-9 in the Flyers' favor.

The Flyers had an early third period power play opportunity that went nowhere. Midway through the period, Oskar Lindblom fired a shot from the deep left slot that hit the post on the long side after Kinkaid got a piece of it; the Flyers' fifth post hit of the game (and second in as many games for Lindblom).

At 13:52 of the third period, on a New Jersey counterattack, Kyle Palmieri scored a wraparound goal as Elliott got injured trying to move laterally and Palmieri scored easily once he got around the net. The assists went to Coleman and Zajac. Pickard came in to replace Elliott after the goal.

Wayne Simmonds had a wide open net staring at him when the puck came out to him on a Kinkaid turnover. He was unable to finish. Coleman added an empty net goal to seal the 3-0 win.

The Flyers finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill

Radko Gudas did not dress for this game due to illness. Andrew MacDonald returned to the Flyers lineup for the first time since Oct. 25 in Boston after sitting out nine games as a healthy scratch. With van Riemsdyk returning to the lineup, Jori Lehterä was a healthy scratch for the first time this season.
