The Coyotes are just about to drop the puck vs the Red Wings, so I thought I'd quickly pass along this news.

Not only is Jakob Chychrun back in the lineup for his first game of the seasons, but the Coyotes have signed him to a six year $4.6 million dollar contract extension.

Chychrun has missed a significant number of games after two straight knee injuries to open the past two seasons (pretty sure they were different knees) and his ELC will expire after this season.

(If you've never heard that song before, you're welcome).

I'll have more detailed analysis later, but this is clearly a great deal. Six years takes Chychrun through the majority of his prime and the cap hit is small and only going to look smaller as time goes on.

Worst case scenario, he is injury prone and he never lives up to his potential. But he'll be young enough throughout the entire contract, and he such high levels of raw talent, that it's probably always going to be a movable deal if it comes down to that.

On the plus side, while the number is a bit high for what he's accomplished to date, it isn't that high and looks like it will age very will if Chychrun hits even a fraction of his potential.

If he ends up a high-end top pairing defenseman - if he hits his ceiling - this is going to be a contract on par with Nazem Kadri's.

Either way, it's a high reward potential with little risk - another smart move by John Chayka who now has Christian Dvorak, Jakob Chychrun and Oliver Ekman Larson locked up for the next six years after this one.
