Heading into tonight’s action against the New Jersey Devils the Penguins find themselves in an unfamiliar spot. They are sitting outside of the playoffs and have a few teams currently ahead of them.

The majority of teams that sit in a playoff spot when American Thanksgiving rolls around stay in a playoff spot. Keep in mind that it is a probability not a destiny. At some point the Penguins are going to have to string together some wins to offset that five game losing streak. It really helps when you can defeat other teams in the division. They have an opportunity to do just that tonight.

Looks like the Botterill Sabres and Rutherford Penguins are in direct competition for the time being.

The depth scoring narrative is being beat to death. It doesn’t make it any less true. The team is struggling to get meaningful contributions from the roster at even-strength

Once upon a time Matt Murray against Cory Schneider would have been an attractive goaltending matchup. The problem is Schneider is at .849 and Murray is at .886. Casey DeSmith will get his third consecutive start. This is the proper decision. Keith Kinkaid will be in net for the Devils. Kinkaid isn’t playing great by any stretch, but .908 is a lot better than .849. DeSmith’s .942 dwarfs Murray’s performance to this point.

Jamie Oleksiak will find himself back in the lineup after his puzzling scratch. Juuso Riikola will be the player on the outside looking in like he should be at this point.
