Highs and Lows help Jets in 5-3 win over Yotes

Matinee games for the Winnipeg Jets have long been an adventure and yesterday's one was no different until the Jets gradually gained some control of the game but that did not keep the Coyotes away.

The critics were out in force and they had plenty to complain about with some rather puzzling interpretations of rules infractions, the play of Scheifele and Wheeler as well as that of blog favorite Tyler Myers.

The good.

Josh Morrissey was brilliant and this kid better slow down on his point production this season and same some for next year on the bridge deal. He was always going to get paid but this bet on himself, much like the one Connor Hellebuyck made for last season will be a brilliant reward if this play keeps up.

Second unit PP

The Jets were rewarded with a power play in the second period and the top line had just come off so it was the second unit who got the start. They did everything but score and controlled the play for 1:25 seconds without a whistles and multiple shots and quality scoring chances.

Adam Lowry

Scored the tying goal in the first period off a nice tip with his stick and generally showed why he is arguably the Jets second best centre. With regular line mates Copp and Tanev he helped create chaos and action in front of Anti Ratta

Jacob Trouba

Did the leg work on the Myers goal by holding the line and controlling the puck where he drew the opposition across and out of position so that Myers had a clean shot for the go ahead goal.

The bad

Is there something off with Blake Wheeler? The speed to pull away is missing and his stride seems choppier than normal. Dumb penalties seem to follow Wheeler and for that matter his centreman too.

Mark Scheifele is known for drawing penalties and not taking them but yesterday much to his bewilderment. He took one in the dumbest of ways where he was away from the puck and for no apparent reason cross checked Goligoski to take an interference call.

The pair seem to be playing far too cute with the puck and not realizing they have drawn some attention from whatever opposition they are playing. A bit of Patrik Laine disease.

The meh

Myers had one of those games where you are glad he found success with a goal but are still extremely puzzled by his general play. Take the Fischer goal, Myers goes to the corner off the face-off which was correct then he leaves his man (Fischer to go towards the OEL who has come down from the point and Little gets up to take him which is correct. Because Myers left Fischer guess who gets the puck and scores? Oh yeah he picked himself on the linesman too.

Here's the video.

Laine was again being cute and soft with the puck through the defensive and neutral zone. This is simply having the wrong approach to the game in certain areas and times. Yes the kid has all world skills and more but he also uses them at the wrong times when the simple play is important and necessary.

It was a win and fans should happy but notice how these wins are coming? Score goal and then hold on. Where is the killer instinct from this team? The Oilers game from Tuesday should be fresh in everyone's mind about closing out games and Arizona did an excellent job of battling back to make it 4-3 with time to tie it. Clayton Keller is a hell of a hockey player.

The one lesson the Jets have to realize is they are no longer surprising or under the radar. They are known entities who draw attention and significant planning for the opposition. There will be few if any freebies and it only gets more difficult this week as St. Louis comes to town and then the Leafs.
