Opening Night in Smashville

It is Opening Night in Smashville… at last!

Plenty of pomp, circumstance and fun before the puck drops on the 2018-19 home season at Bridgestone Arena. The plaza party gets going at 3pm, the traditional Gold Walk (hosted by yours truly) is at 4pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. Be in your seats early for an excellent opening presentation including the banner raising.

Then… it’s back to work. The 2-0-0 Predators are taking on the 1-1-0 Calgary Flames. The Flames opened their season with a split in a home and home against Vancouver, winning their home opener by putting up a touchdown and extra point in a 7-4 win after losing to the Canucks in Vancouver’s home lid lifter.

There’s a familiar face on the Flames, ex-Predator James Neal along with goaltender Mike Smith, who always seems to play well against Nashville. This is a team with some weapons, Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monihan and team points leader Matthew Tkachuk. Expectations are high in the C of Red after an up and down season last year. The Flames always play Nashville tough, taking two of three in last year’s season series, the Preds will be in Calgary on October 19.

For the Predators, they will be looking to continue their solid start to the 18/19 season after sweeping through New York with wins over the Rangers and Islanders. The Predators 11-6-(1)-1 in home openers and have won nine of their last 11 openers including their last five. The JoFa line has picked up where they left off last season, the FiST line looks strong and the blueline continues to contribute offensively.

The only point of concern for this team is… wait for it… discipline. Bad penalties at bad times haven’t bit this team hard yet, but it bears watching.

Game time is 7pm… a special one hour pregame on Fox Sports Tennessee gets going at 6pm, along with pregame on 102.5 the game. Game coverage starts at 7pm with Willy Daunic and Chris Mason covering the call on FSTN and the Voice of the Predators, Pete Weber starts his 21st season behind the mic for the Preds with Hal Gill on color as 102.5 the Game and the Predators Radio Network handle the audio side of things.

See you tonight at Bridgestone Arena!
