Shea Weber To Captain Canadiens, 30th In Team History

The Montreal Canadiens news just doesn’t seem to stop lately and October 1st, 2018 is no exception as the Habs announced their 30th Captain in team history, Shea Weber.

The decision appeared to be on the wall with Weber’s league wide reputation as one of the games best, fearless defenders and leaders. He served as a alternate Captain his first two seasons in Montreal as well.

Shea had previously captained the Nashville Predators and helped create the fanbase the Predators enjoy today. He is also very much responsible for their trademark nickname “Smashville”.

The veteran is entering his 14th in the NHL season with a career stat line of 867 GP, 189 Goals, 312 Assists, 501 Points, and 620 Penalty Minutes.

As the Habs official website states, Weber is the first defenceman to be named Captain of the Habs since 89-90 when Chris Chelios shared the role with Guy Carbonneau.

Earning the Alternate roles were Brendan Gallagher and Paul Byron, two heart and soul players who play above their weight class consistently and with tenacity.

I cannot agree more with the decisions made by management here to give us the new leaders of the Canadiens on the ice. Weber was almost a no brainer with his experience, poise, skill, and reputation. A case could be made for Gallagher to be Captain as well, but perhaps the role is his after he serves as alternate for 3-5 years. Byron is a bit of a surprise, but it looks good on the team to recognize a high quality role player who takes the tough assignments and has still been scoring 20 goals a season.

This announcement is fantastic on so many levels for the Canadiens organization. They get a player who commands respect around the league and who has the respect of NHL officials. They get a leadership group that leads by the best types of examples and work ethic that will help mentor a increasingly green team, especially on the back end. There is also NO ONE that can logically dispute why the players named shouldn’t have. Weber and Gallagher are players that every team in the NHL would want and cause zero problems and Byron is a perfect example to any NHL player that hard work and a team attitude can take you from the waiver wire to multi year contracts and a leadership position.

Perfect start to October….
