After searching for about a month, the Ottawa Senators have hired their new assistant general manager, Peter MacTavish:

If you haven’t heard of him, you’re not alone. And if you have heard of him, you’re probably lying. However, I think that’s a good thing because it’s better that they brought in somebody who hasn’t been closely connected with the organization or been around the league as a retread. MacTavish is only 44 years old and was a labour and employment partner with Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, and also worked in player representation for 15 years.

His role will be targeted towards contracts, salary arbitration, and managerial support in both Ottawa and Belleville. That’s not nearly as much as Randy Lee did as AGM, but that means that MacTavish can probably do a better job by focusing on one aspect of the job. The Senators clearly need help with getting fair value on their contracts because there have been far too many overpayments for marginal depth players.

MacTavish is from Ottawa, and although normally I’d criticize them for bringing in someone local, I’m hoping that he is aware of the sentiment from the fanbase right now and understands what is going on. No matter what, he is a new face that can hopefully bring in some new ideas and a different perspective.

The biggest takeaway from this though is that in the press release, the Senators announced that he will be “one of the team’s assistant general managers,” indicating that there will be another hire probably more tailored for the hockey operations side. I’m certainly not opposed to bringing in more people to assist Pierre Dorion, although I just hope that it is not someone like Claude Loiselle who was apparently interviewed:

It’s good to see another hire by the Senators, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing about another one or two within the week. It just needs to be somebody that is innovative and not someone who will agree with everything that Dorion says.
