Quick Hits: August 19, 2018

1) The Flyers' Rookie Camp starts on Sept. 9 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ. The annual Rookies Game vs. the New York Islanders' rookies, which concludes Rookie Camp before the start of full camp with the veterans, is on Sept. 12 (6 p.m. EDT) at the Northwell Health Ice Center's Al Arbour Rink in East Meadow, New York.

2) In SHL preseason action, Flyers forward prospect Olle Lycksell centered the second line and tallied a pair of goals in Linköping's 4-2 road win over Malmö. Flyers defense prospect Adam Ginning skated on the first pair in this game, paired with veteran Eddie Larsson. Ginning was minus-one at even strength in the game. On Thursday, Linköping hosts Djurgården, featuring Flyers defense prospect David Bernhardt.

3) On Saturday in Stockholm, visiting team Brynäs was blanked 4-0 by AIK in a preseason game. Flyers prospects Marcus Westfält centered the fourth line for BIF. The closest Brynäs came to scoring were two shots by Joel Kellman that hit the post and a blast from the point by Bensalem native Ryan Gunderson. Brynäs returns to action on Thursday, hosting Mora.

4) Before attending the Flyers' rookie camp, some of the organization's Ontario Hockey League prospects will be in training camp and preseason games with their respective teams. Schedules are as follows:

* The defending OHL champion Hamilton Bulldogs, featuring Flyers prospect Matthew Strome, are on the road against the Flint Firebirds on Aug. 31, and home on Sept. 1 to host the Windsor Spitfires and on the road again on Sept. 2 against the Erie Otters.

* Team captain Isaac Ratcliffe and the Guelph Storm have games on Sept. 1, hosting the Peterborough Petes, and hosting the Mississauga Steelheads on Sept. 3.

* Maksim Sushko and the Sudbury Wolves have games on Sept. 2 (hosting the Sudbury Wolves) and Sept. 3 (on the road in Sudbury). Sushko will likely dress in one of the two games.

* OHL MVP runner-up Morgan Frost and the new-look Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (new head coach, many notable players from last year's team moving up to the pros) do not have any preseason games until Sept. 13. By that point, Frost will be in training camp with the Flyers.

5) This season, the Flyers do not have any prospects in the QMJHL (German Rubtsov and Pascal Laberge are moving up to the pro level for the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms) and only one in the WHL.

6) The Flyers' lone Western Hockey League affiliated prospect this season is Everett Silvertips defenseman Wyatte Wylie. The native Washingtonian is the subject of the newest summertime article in the prospect profile series on the Flyers' official website. Everett, which like the Soo Greyhounds will have large-scale turnover atop its roster from recent seasons (including goalie Carter Hart graduating to the pro hockey ranks), is in preseason action on Aug. 31 (home vs. the Tri-City Americans), Sept. 1 (home vs. the Seattle Thunderbirds) and Sept. 2 (home vs. the Portland Winterhawks).

7) The annual making and painting of the Flyers new ice surface at the Wells Fargo Center, is scheduled for Aug. 27. That's always a welcomed date on the offseason calendar; a tangible sign that the next NHL season is just around the corner.

8) The Training Camp preview edition of the FlyerBuzz podcast on Flyers Radio 24/7 will air on the Flyers' official internet radio station and be available for dowload on Sept 10. As always, the show will be co-hosted by Brian Smith and me.

9) A member of last season's Memorial Cup winning Acadie Bathurst Titan (QMJHL), 20-year-old Mitchell Balmas will be in Rookie Camp and Training Camp with the Flyers this September, bidding to win an entry-level contract as a tryout player. Presently, he is in training camp with his new QMHJL team, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Last season, the Nova Scotia native tallied 72 points (42 goals, 30 assists) in 68 games last season. Fifteen of his goals came on the power play; 3rd in the QMJHL. For more, click here.

10) Aug 19 Flyers Alumni birthday: A five-time NHL All-Star, Flyers Hall of Fame defenseman Jim Watson was born on Aug. 19, 1952 in Smithers, British Columbia. Jim and older sibling Joe Watson, a two-time NHL All-Star, are the only brother duo in the Flyers Hall of Fame.

11) In memoriam: This week marks 21 years since the tragic leukemia-related passing of 24-year-old Flyers/Hershey forward Yanick Dupre. He passed away on Aug. 16, 1997.

12) Sunday is the third day of the annual four-day Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp in Atlantic City. The Flyers Fantasy Cup championship game and consolation game will be played on Monday.
