Quick Hits: August 18, 2018

1) During the summer of 2015, the Phantoms signed defenseman Logan Pyett to an American Hockey League contract for the 2015-16 season. Unfortunately, during training camp, Pyett was diagnosed with a form of cancer (sarcoma in his left leg). He never ended up playing a game for the Phantoms but had the full support of both Lehigh Valley and the NHL parent Philadelphia Flyers both during and following his ordeal.

For the 2015 edition of the annual Hockey Fights Cancer night at the Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers players collectively dedicated the game to Pyett. Team captain Claude Giroux said that the team just wanted their Phantoms comrade and fellow player to know they were behind him, and Flyers general manager Ron Hextall made a statement pledging that the organization would support Pyett in any possible way.

Pyett underwent successful treatment and returned to Allentown for some workouts with the team and to watch some games. Even after his contract expired, the Flyers/Phantoms organization stayed in touch with him even after his contract expired.

Now cancer-free, Pyett spent last season taking a first step toward resuming his career as he played in the Asia Leage of Ice Hockey (ALIH) for the Tohuko Freeblades. This season, the 30-year-old will be back in the American Hockey League as he signed a contract with the Hershey Bears. On Twitter, he posted his gratitude not only to the Bears for signing him and the Freeblades for giving him a means of returning to pro hockey but also the Flyers and Phantoms for their support of him throughout his battle.

2) Top Flyers goaltending prospect Carter Hart will be the lone Flyers prospect at the annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase. The photo-op and interview event will be held Toronto on August 26. Last year, Philippe Myers and Oskar Lindblom participated.

3) August 18 Flyers Alumni birthdays: Bruce Cowick (1951), Brian Dobbin (1966), Forbes Kennedy (1935), Ossi Väänänen (1980).
