Quick Hits: August 17, 2018

1) SHL preseason: Flyers goaltending prospect Felix Sandström stopped 29 of 31 shots in a 3-2 preseason road win for HV71 over Frölunda on Thursday. Jönköping was outshot by a 31-12 margin for the game but took a 3-0 lead to the first intermission and let Sandström take care of the rest. He stopped 12 of 13 shots in the second period and protected the two-goal lead in the third period until yielding a late power play goal. Thereafter, Sandström (11 third-period saves) slammed the door.

2) The annual Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp gets underway today in Atlantic City. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, Aug. 17: Welcome reception at Top of the Trop. Players first opportunity to meet their teammates and mingle with Flyers Alumni.

Saturday, Aug. 18: One practice and one game for each team at Flyers Skate Zone Atlantic City. The on-ice activity will be followed by an evening pig roast and live entertainment at the Ducktown Tavern.

Sunday, Aug. 19: Two tournament games for each team, played in a three-period, 15-minute stop-clock format. Afterwards, there will be an evening farewell party at the Tropicana, featuring a surf-and-turf dinner, a comedy show with Big Daddy Graham, and a free-wheeling “hot stove” session with the Flyers Alumni.

Monday, Aug. 20: Consolation and Championship games.

The Flyers Alumni Camp program is directed by Bob Kelly, who serves as the organization’s Ambassador of Hockey, along with Rob Baer, the Flyers organization’s Youth and Amateur Hockey Manager. This year’s Flyers Alumni instructors/ coaches include Mark Howe, Bill Barber, Danny Briere, Keith Jones, Brad Marsh, Andre “Moose” Dupont, Joe Watson, Ian Laperriere and Kelly.

3) August 17 Flyers Alumni birthdays: Pete Peeters (1957), Drew Callander (1956).

4) Today in Flyers history: On August 17, 1977, the Flyers signed free agent forward Brian Burke as a free agent after the Providence College graduate had a six-game AHL tryout with the Springfield Indians the previous year. Burke spent the 1977-78 season with the Calder Cup champion Maine Mariners (three goals, eight points, 60 penalty minutes in 65 regular season games, 25 PIM in eight playoff games) before attending Harvard Law School. Subsequently, Burke re-emerged in hockey as a longtime executive. Many years later, his son, Patrick Burke served as a Flyers scout before going to work for the NHL.

5) Congratulations to Dave MacIsaac, a defenseman on the 1997-98 Calder Cup winning Philadelphia Phantoms and, in recent years, a regular on the Flyers Alumni Team, for his hiring as assistant general manager of the Berlin BlackJacks; a new team in the LNAH.
