Penguins sending Jarry message with two-way deal

It appears the Penguins will be heading into the next season with the same goaltending depth chart that they did when they entered the playoffs last season.

Barring Jarry totally outplaying Casey DeSmith it is likely Jarry will be the starting goaltender in WB/S. In 2018-19 Jarry’s deal is a two-way deal. This means he will be paid like an AHL player in the AHL and an NHL player in the NHL. In year two of the deal it is a one-way deal which means he would be paid like an NHL player whether he is in the NHL or AHL. It looks like they want Jarry to keep developing for another year and then take over the back up spot next year. He could certainly play his way into the backup role this year, but he would have to give the team a reason to do so.

I’m not as high on Tristan Jarry as some are. His professional sample has been underwhelming to this point. Outside of playing at a .925 level for half a season in the AHL in 2016-17 he’s been below average.

He is certainly athletic and I can see why people would project a successful pro career, but he hasn’t performed well enough yet to earn a steady NHL gig.
