Contract comparables going in Leafs favor

The Toronto Maple Leafs last contractual hurdle of the summer is a new deal for restricted free agent William Nylander, and there has not been a peep out of GM Kyle Dubas other than an indication that the club will be patient in getting a new deal done.

Between now and the beginning of training camp in mid-September, the Leafs need to be concerned about other RFA’s getting signed to deals (like Ottawa’s Mark Stone, Minnesota winger Jason Zucker and Detroit’s Dylan Larkin), which could be used as benchmarks by Nylander’s representatives on his new deal.

Both Stone and Zucker filed for salary arbitration and will have their hearing in the next few weeks, while Larkin is coming off his entry-level contract and is not eligible for arbitration.

What could be considered a good sign for getting Nylander locked up at a favorable number is the extension signed by Calgary forward Elias Lindholm on Monday.

The 23-year-old winger was acquired as part of the five-player deal between Carolina and the Flames that included defensemen Noah Hanifin and Dougie Hamilton.

Lindholm was a top-five pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and has averaged 42 points the last four seasons with the Hurricanes, which earned him a six-year, $29.1 Million extension ($4.85 Million AAV).

Nylander does not have the same arbitration leverage and posted higher totals (back-to-back 61-point seasons) in the final two years of his ELC, but Lindholm deal could be an indicator that the Leafs can get him signed to a long-term contract around the same cap hit as Winnipeg got Nikolaj Ehlers signed for last October $6 Million AAV).
