Elias Lindholm wasn't the only restricted free agent the Calgary Flames locked up Monday afternoon.
They also agreed to terms with goaltender Jon Gillies on a two-year contract.
In 2018-19, he'll earn $750K if he's in Calgary and $250K if he's in Stockton. In 2019-20, when he is no longer waivers exempt, he'll make $750K regardless of where he is playing.
It seems the Flames' plan is to stick with what they have and give Gillies a legitimate opportunity to compete for the backup job. That is both reasonable and horrifying at the same time.
On one hand, he's long been regarded as a very good goaltending prospect and he posted a respectable .917 save percentage in Stockton. That was good for 7th among 26 goaltenders to play in at least 35 games.
On the other hand, Gillies ranked 71st among 72 eligible NHL goaltenders (400+ minutes) in 5v5 save percentage and looked completely over his head on most nights.
Yes, it was a small sample size. Yes, the Flames were a mess in front of Gillies at times. Still, a sub .900 save percentage during Gillies' test run is concerning given, if he makes the team, he'll be backing up a 36-year-old with an injury history.
My best guess is they'll end up running it back with a Mike Smith and David Rittich duo but that will obviously sort itself out in camp.
Should that be the case, and Gillies fail to win the backup job within the next two seasons, I think this contract may be his last with the Flames.
