Coyotes and Blackhawks Make Trade

The Coyotes and Blackhawks have complete a large trade:

The Coyotes get paid off to take on another contract. Marian Hossa (according to Capfriendly.com) has a cap hit of $5.25 for three more years. He only gets paid $1 million in actual money. He is retired.

The Coyotes send away Markus Kruger, who they recently got from Carolina along with a third round pick in exchange for Jordan Martinook and a fourth liner. Both picks in that deal were for the 2018 draft.

The Coyotes also send away Mackenzie Entwistle (3rd round pick 2017), Andrew McDonald (30, journyman AHL defenseman) and Jordan Maletta (underrated and 23).

The Coyotes are now at $69 million against the cap, meaning that this deal was not about reaching the cap floor, which they have already well exceeded. It's simply a team that likely isn't spending to the cap getting assets for selling their cap room.

What they get back is 24 year old Vinnie Hinonstroza, a very intriguing young player. Last time he was in the AHL he was a point per game player, and this year in Chicago he was a half point per game player. He appears to have some skill and upside. He is signed for two years with a $1.5 million cap hit.

He is definitely a more helpful player to the Coyotes than Marcus Kruger would have been.

The final piece for the Coyotes is Jordan Oesterle. He needs a new contract, but he's a very underrated defender, who can move the puck and put up some points. He's a really sneaky addition and fits the Chicago mold of dumping good cheap players with excellent advanced stats. (Franson, Duclair, and now Hinostroza and Oesterl).

Oesterle adds more depth to an already good blueline. He probably represents an upgrade of Goligoski.

Overall, the Coyotes give up nothing of value, and in return they get two above average youngish NHL players with upside, plus they add some draft pick value.

This clears cap space for the Hawks, but it's an expensive way to do it. Both Hinostroza and Oesterle are the kind of smart pickups that have a ton of value in a salary cap league.

The Coyotes have now made three trades recently with the Hawks. Connor Murphy for Nik Hjalmarsson, Duclair for Panik and now this.

The Coyotes have come out ahead drastically in each of these moves.
