For the Jets it's good news and mainly for their fans as Connor Hellebuyck signs a 6 year 37 million dollar deal for an AAV of 6.167.

Great tweet from Scott Billeck here:

Also here is another from Murat of the Athletic where he shows a cool stat:

So what does this mean? The basic expected salary cap number to be inflicted on the Jets decreasing space is there and it's pretty bang on with expectations. In a hopeful world this deal would have been 500k less per year but given what Hellebuyck did last season and the goalie market in general as well as his age and contract position it's fair value. In fact some had projected a higher AAV at less term.

This is the first big one for the Jets this off season and comes in near the Scheifele threshold that many fans suggest is part of the team's base cap structure. I'm not sure that matters a lot to non- forwards or goalies particularly as time moves on with inflation and cap limit increases.

The first of many is done and by many accounts it's done well based on term and value. That being said the Jets still do not have what anyone would consider a reliable back-up should something happen to Hellebuyck. At 6 million plus it makes sense that they have brought in Brossoit last the price they did. The two goalies share a goalie coach in the off season and perhaps this is motivation for the 25 year old Brossoit to work on his game to the level Hellebuyck did last off season.
